Parfois, tout un album est résumé à son morceau d’ouverture. Ce qui peut être dans certains cas une critique positive (ex : Reign In Blood, et son anthologique « Angel Of Death », qui calme tout le monde et révèle bien le chef d’œuvre intégral), parfois la connotation est plus que négative. Ce qui est le cas pour THE AGONIST.
Ce qui est même trompeur, si l’on pousse l’analyse un peu plus loin. En effet, mettez Lullabies For The Dormant Mind dans votre mange disques préféré, écoutez le premier titre, « The Tempest (The Siren's Song, The Banshee's Cry) », et vous aurez en 5 minutes un condensé parfait des 35 autres qui vont suivre.
Si je vous dis en plus, que ce morceau est le plus inspiré du lot, vous m’aurez compris.
Et c’est fort dommage, car on sent que le groupe a un réel potentiel, qu’il gâche à force d’agression systématique et d’un sens de la composition un poil trop timoré. Alors certes, le son est énorme, les riffs épais et joliment méchants, et on a même droit régulièrement à des blast-beats qui boostent l’ensemble…
Mais la voix de Alissa White-Gluz est totalement sous employée (pour mémoire, il s’agit d’une suicide girl ayant connu son heure de gloire à American Idol), mis à part sur l’excellent intermède classique de Tchaïkovski a cappella, et on a l’impression qu’elle tient plus la place de gimmick sexy que de réelle vocaliste. De plus, les grognements de son compère sont totalement irritants passé dix minutes d’écoute, et la linéarité des rythmiques ne vient pas sauver l’ensemble.
Alors au petit jeu des comparaisons, on pourrait citer un NIGHTWISH plus Death, un EVANESCENCE enragé et peu inspiré, ou pour faire plus simple, un énième groupe de Metalcore qui ne surnagera pas dans la masse.
Et c’est dommage, car à l’occasion du final de « Chlorpromazine », on croit quelques instants que le groupe aurait pu tenter sa chance en variant les atmosphères et les tempi…mais non, ils préfèrent pour l’instant se contenter du strict minimum, et s’assurer une réussite commerciale auprès de la frange la plus juvénile du public.
D’autres on tenté le hold-up avant vous les gars. Et avec beaucoup plus de brio !
