Malgré le fait que j’avais été déçu par Awake, je n’avais pu résister à l’époque de sauter sur le dernier DREAM THEATER en date : A Change Of Seasons. Ma réaction avait été ambivalente : ravi et déçu à la fois. Ravi parce que je retrouvais le DREAM THEATER que j’avais rencontré sur Images & Words. Déçu parce qu’il n’y avait qu’un seul morceau d’eux, le reste étant des reprises interprétées live (c’est comme les contrats d’assurance, je n’avais pas bien lu les petites annotations en bas de page au moment de cette acquisition).
« A Change Of Seasons » a été composé du temps d’Images & Words. Cependant, il n’avait pas été intégré à la galette finale. Après le départ de Kevin Moore du poste de claviériste (c’est Derek Sherinian qui a repris le poste), le groupe a décidé de revoir ce morceau puis de l’enregistrer en studio (il le jouait déjà en live). On a donc le droit à une pièce de vingt trois minutes. C’est une longueur alors jamais atteinte par le groupe. Malgré des pièces étonnantes sur leurs précédents albums, ils n’avaient pas été aussi loin. Volontairement découpé en sept parties, on sent justement les passages de l’un à l’autre. On n’a pas la fluidité que l’on pouvait rencontrer sur « Learning To Live », par exemple. Et c’est un rien dommage. Outre cela, ce morceau est vraiment très bon et fait passer la pilule Awake. Bien sûr, il y a certains passages qui auraient pu être raccourci parce qu’un peu répétitifs, mais sinon, on retrouve le talent et l’émotion dont sait faire preuve le quintet. Les passages plus tranquilles sont vraiment emplis d’émotion, notamment grâce à James LaBrie. Les passages plus métalliques ont un son plus gros, plus incisifs. Limite destructeur par moment.
Mais « A Change Of Seasons » n’est pas la seule chose que l’on trouve sur cet EP. Le groupe avait enregistré des reprises qu’ils avaient faites à l’occasion d’un concert avec d’autres groupes au Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club de Londres. Cela nous donne des reprises d’ELTON JOHN, de LED ZEPPELIN, de DEEP PURPLE et un medley avec du FLOYD, du QUEEN et plein d’autres choses. Si je ne suis pas forcément un grand admirateur de tous ces groupes, on ne peut cacher que les reprises sont bonnes et parfaitement exécutées. Après, est-ce que tout ceci était indispensable ? Bien sûr que non ! Pourtant, il est intéressant de voir ce grand groupe jouer autre chose que ses propres morceaux et de découvrir aussi leurs influences. Et puis, il faut bien avouer qu’un seul titre sur le disque, cela ne l’aurait vraiment pas fait du tout.
A Change Of Seasons, malgré son format étrange, n’est pas un disque à côté duquel on peut passer quand on aime DREAM THEATER. Et il nous a permis d’attendre la suite…
