Deux ans après Carriers Of Dust, MIRRORTHRONE revient enfoncer le clou avec Gangrène, le troisième opus du one-man-band tenu par Vladimir Crochet. Ce mec est très actif car il fait partie également des groupes UNHOLY MATRIMONY et WEEPING BIRTH. Pour MIRRORTHRONE, ce suisse s’occupe de tout ce qui gravite autour de son bébé : de la composition à l’enregistrement en passant par l’interprétation et l’artwork, Vladimir est le seul maître à bord, décideur souverain de ses propres choix, sans être perturbé par le moindre maquignon qui pourrait pointer le bout de son nez ou s’immiscer dans ses affaires.
Vladimir s’est donc attaqué au successeur de Carriers Of Dust et cela ne s’agissait pas d’une chose facile, car succéder et essayer de surpasser cet opus remarquable est un défi difficilement réalisable. Souvenez-vous, MIRRORTHRONE évolue dans un univers redéfinissant le Black Metal symphonique orchestral aux élans majestueux, où mélodie et mélancolie s’accouplent volontiers avec violence et furie. En six titres et près de soixante-cinq minutes de musique, Gangrène confirme cette tendance, pourtant cet album aura du mal à satisfaire ceux qui ont succombé à son prédécesseur. Je m’explique. Irréprochable techniquement, doté d’une richesse dans les compositions quasi instinctive, Gangrène est moins marquant, plus subtile, où les moments accrocheurs se font rares.
Reprenant les mêmes ingrédients qu’il y a deux ans, Vladimir se reposerait-il sur les éléments qui ont été salués sur Carriers Of Dust ? Il est vrai que Gangrène basé sur la même ossature, touche parfois avec une douceur et une mélancolie qu’il n’y avait pas auparavant. Les claviers ont une place moins prépondérante, mais l’ajout de piano de façon plus importante a son petit effet : les ambiances sont plus sombres, et délaissent l’agression pure et simple. Cette diversité est renforcé par le chant du monsieur, qui brutal et gutturale par moment, laisse place à des parties claires somptueuses comme sur « No One by My Side » pour repartir dans un ton agressif typiquement Black Metal. Les textes relatent toujours autant de misanthropie, de tristesse et de haine, et la musique parvient parfaitement à transcrire ces sentiments destructeurs qui deviennent plus posés ou intimistes.
Il était donc évident que Gangrène souffre de la comparaison avec le monumental Carrier Of Dust. Cet opus est un bon album mais qui perd de sa saveur car l’ombre de son prédécesseur le recouvre totalement. Il apparaît donc un petit peu décevant quand on sait ce que le Suisse peut faire et surtout ce qu’il a déjà offert !
