Il y’a peu de temps déjà je louais la qualité et la profondeur de la scène extrême belge avec ses valeurs aussi obscures que sûres (cf. SUICIDE OF DEMONS). Eh bien ne vous attendez pas à un brutal changement de veste avec OCEANS OF SADNESS. Si sur le papier, cette formation a plus de gueule que les autres (naissance en 1995, six beaux albums au jour d’aujourd’hui, des dates au Graspop Meeting, des ouvertures pour DIMMU BORGIR ou WITHIN TEMPTATION…), elle s’appuie également sur un line-up solide composé de six braves gars talentueux. A première vue, Scarlet Records possède en ce combo l’une de ses plus belles pièces. Rien que la pochette me laisse pantois. La qualité d’une nature morte-vivante dans des tons sombres et automnaux. Le genre d’artwork qu’on exhibe fièrement. Et si en plus la saison s’y prête…
Mais là n’est pas l’essentiel. L’essentiel, c’est peut-être invisible, mais ici, c’est surtout les entrailles d’OCEANS OF SADNESS. Et en bon haruspice que je suis, je trouve fort intéressant la lecture de ces viscères là. Le bal s’ouvre avec « Roulette ». Pas un hasard. Ce titre renferme puissance, magnétisme et surtout la quintessence de la tendance progressive ; des rythmes en perpétuelles variations, une ligne de chant rauque mais relativement clean. La suite est encore plus explicite. « Self-Fulfilling Prophecy » possède une triplette vocale Death/Black/Prog dont le débit final hypnotise encore plus que l’usage d’orgue. OPETH, TYPE O NEGATIVE, AMORPHIS, NOVEMBERS DOOM, tout ces drôles d’oiseaux ne feraient presque plus qu’un, dépeuplant ainsi l’avifaune. Mais il est bien entendu qu’OCEANS OF SADNESS est bien plus qu’un vulgaire mélange de ce qu’il se fait de mieux. Ils tamponnent chaque piste de leur sceau tout en y apportant fraîcheur et dynamisme avec quelques éminents hôtes comme Annlouice Loegdlund (DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA) qui effectue une apparition remarquée sur « Subconscious » ou Johan Liiva (HEARSE, ex-ARCH ENEMY) sur « In The End ». Superbe, au demeurant. Avec l’ajout de compositions un poil plus posées (« The Weakest Link »), plus Rock (« Failure ») ou plus sombre (« Between The Lines »), la parité entre les influences est parfaitement respectée. Manque plus que l’instrumentale. Pouf ! Magie magie, v’là-t’y pas que nos belges nous pondent une superbe instru au piano avec pour doux nom « Hope » pour clôturer comme il se doit leur œuvre.
Sans être excessivement varié ni particulièrement ingénieux, The Arrogance Of Ignorance reste une création solide et prouve que ce sextet s’avère être suffisamment mature et intelligent pour nous proposer un divertissement digne de ce nom. L’arrogance ici, ce n’est pas l’ignorance, c’est plutôt OCEANS OF SADNESS.
