Comme je le disais dans la review de leur MCD "The Blossom", TODT (The Old Dead Tree) a signé en 2002 chez Season Of Mist et nous revient (après quatre ans !) avec un album surpuissant empli de mélodies et d'ambiances définitivement sombres et dépressives.
En effet, on ne change pas un système ayant fait ses preuves. Les voix féminines sont toujours exclues au profit de voix masculines claires et de type Death guttural ce qui n'est pas plus mal car cela les démarques un peu de leur camarde de jeu évoluant dans leur style. A noter que Manuel (le chanteur, forcément!) a beaucoup travaillé sa voix et a aussi élargi son registre.
Leur musique évolue toujours entre Pop, Metal, Dark, Rock seventies et est toujours aussi riches en ambiances et autres mélodies mélancoliques.
Les textes forment un concept et tournent autour du suicide en hommage à leur ancien batteur sont pour autant tomber dans l'apologie de celui-ci.
Le son est énorme car il a bénéficié du concours de personnes qui ont fait plus que leur preuves, production de Andy Classen (Dew-Scented, Rotting Christ, Krisiun, Tankard...) et mastering de Goran Finnberg (Opeth, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir).
A noter les reprises de "It's The Same For Everyone" et "The Dark Missionary" issues du MCD "The Blossom" qui prennent une toute autre ampleur et gagnent en intensité.
Au final, j'en suis ressorti à en me poser des questions sur le suicide car j'avais des idées bien arrêtées dessus mais ce disque fait prendre conscience de tous ses éléments comme le profond malaise et la souffrance au quotidien de la personne touchée par ce mal être mais aussi de l'incompréhension et de l'impuissance de son entourage.
TODT nous fournit ici un bon album, bien ficelé et avec une forte personnalité. A se procurer...
