Me voila de retour vers DESTRUCTION après la chronique peu élogieuse de Thrash Anthems il y a quelques temps. Ancien fer de lance du Metal rapide allemand tombé en désuétude pour cause d’évolution trop fine pour les fans de base, la bande à Schmier revient de plus belle avec ce nouvel opus, sobrement intitulé D.e.v.o.l.u.t.i.o.n.
Et une fois de plus, je suis assis le cul entre deux chaises. Comment procéder pour aboutir à un jugement totalement objectif ? Dois je occulter le passé du groupe et faire l’impasse sur des réalisations historiques telles Sentence Of Death ou Release From Agony pour me concentrer sur le présent, ou bien suis-je obligé de prendre en compte leur actif in extenso pour ne négliger aucun élément à charge ?
Si je suis le premier chemin, et considère donc DESTRUCTION sur ses dernières années, je suis obligé d’admettre que ce nouvel album possède plus d’une qualité. Un son phénoménal tout d’abord, mettant diablement bien en relief la puissance des compos, un chant revanchard convaincant, une interprétation investie, et une kyrielle de thèmes agressifs. Rien que le titre d’ouverture, « D.e.v.o.l.u.t.i.o.n », outrageusement Thrash suffira à ravir les moins convaincus d’entre vous. L’alternance de passages Heavy en diable et de chevauchées débridées garantit à l’auditeur une écoute confortable, et les multiples breaks jonchant les morceaux assurent une bonne ligne de défense contre la linéarité. Les soli plus qu’impeccables confirment tout le bien que l’on peut penser des musiciens et la présence de chœurs guerriers rassure quand au potentiel de fédération du groupe, mais…
…mais si je suis le second chemin, je dois admettre que cette livraison déçoit. Autrefois unique, le groupe avec le son actuel ressemble étrangement à une nouvelle signature avide de reconnaissance. Ce qui faisait le petit plus du groupe, à savoir cette faculté à se démarquer des autres combos du cru grâce à des morceaux simples mais incroyablement inventifs à disparu au profit d’une puissance générale accrue, mais qui peine parfois à dissimuler des titres relativement uniformes.
Ou sont passés les « Mad Butcher », « Invincible Force », « Bestial Invasion » ou autres « Unconscious Ruins » ? Certes le côté inégal de certaines de leurs productions s’est estompé, mais au profit d’une homogénéité formatée qui les replace dans le peloton central de la meute Néo-Thrash toujours grandissante.
Au vu des récentes performances de vieux combos sur le retour, et de la nouvelle garde qui avance toujours à plus grands pas, il serait de bon ton que DESTRUCTION retrouve la flamme sous peine de passer pour une curiosité temporelle anecdotique.
S’adapter oui, se conformer non !
