THE BURNING est un groupe qui nous vient du Danemark et qui propose, avec Storm The Walls, son premier album. Prenant ces racines dans le Thrash et n’hésitant pas à emprunter au Death, le groupe utilise un mélange que bien d’autres ont déjà manipulé auparavant. Il est donc naturel de ne rien trouver de réellement original dans la musique que joue le groupe. Toutefois, on ne peut nier qu’elle est parfois efficace et fait bouger la tête par moment. Seulement, dans cette même tête, il ne reste rien une fois le bouton « Stop » poussé. Pas de souvenir, pas de riff dont on ne pourrait se détacher. Et pourtant, on se dit qu’il y avait un petit truc sympa dans… quel morceau déjà ? C’est donc le véritable problème du groupe. Il offre une musique efficace, puissante et servie par une grosse production bien faite mais il lui manque un brin de personnalité et surtout de trouver le riff qui fera qu’un de leur morceau deviendra incontournable.
On est donc confrontés à des morceaux qui utilisent une recette bien huilées et qui marche presque à tous les coups : l’alternance entre un rythme rapide et un autre en mid tempo. Cela donne de bonnes poussées de puissance durant les morceaux pour ensuite revenir à des ambiances puisées dans le Hardcore. « Weaking » est un des rares morceaux à ne pas suivre ce modèle en étant assez lent de tout son long. Pesant même. Bon, il ne faut pas non plus renier ce qui peut être retenu. Un titre comme « Fire » mérite qu’on s’y attarde avec son riff puissant et syncopé. Par contre, les paroles à la TOP BOYS (« The fire burns ! »… nan, déconne), ils auraient pu éviter. Par contre, malgré les défauts de cet album dus principalement à un manque flagrant de personnalité, l’album s’écoute quand même bien et rapidement puisqu’il ne fait que trente quatre minutes pour douze morceaux. Autant dire qu’aucun d’eux ne s’attarde au-delà de l’essentiel, ce qui est déjà pas mal.
Au final, THE BURNING ne réussit pas vraiment son coup d’essai. Il faut espérer que ce sera mieux la prochaine fois, si prochaine fois il y a.
