IBOGAÏNE… est-ce que le premier album de ce groupe français va avoir les mêmes propriétés euphorisantes que la substance à laquelle il emprunte le nom ? Sincèrement, pas sur moi en tous cas. IBOGAÏNE mélange Metal et Hardcore dans une musique qui se rapproche parfois du Thrash dans une version qui rythmiquement m’a semblée assez binaire.
Le côté Hardcore est grandement apporté par le chant de Djil. Même si son chant cadre bien sur les parties les plus brutales, elles sont par contre moins en osmose avec les parties où le groupe recherche une autre direction, un peu plus expérimentale sans l’être trop non plus. Du coup, le côté « on mixe les influences pour ne pas être trop linéaire » tombe un peu à l’eau. Dommage. Parce qu’il est vrai que le groupe essaye de sortir parfois des sentiers battus, comme c’est le cas sur « Feeding The Fog » ou encore « Brain Gobbler ». Certes, les changements ne sont pas radicaux, ce sont plutôt des petites touches qui viennent agrémenter la musique assez compacte du groupe, comme ce rythme Jungle. Mais les incursions dans le différent ne sont pas suffisamment marquées à mon sens pour que le tout sonne vraiment comme quelque chose de différent. Du coup, ce sont plus les riffs Metal classiques et les schémas de batterie binaires qui restent dans les esprits. On notera aussi une volonté sur « Zombi » de vouloir s’essayer à poser une ambiance. Mais, là encore, rapidement, on se retrouve dans une configuration classique de morceau qui part dans une brutalité basique. Ce n’est pas vraiment mal fait, c’est juste décevant quand on voit que le groupe ne se prive pas d’incorporer des éléments qui n’appartiennent pas forcément à la sphère métallique. On aurait espérer plus pour avoir un album qui sorte de l’ordinaire plutôt que ce pavé magmatique et, à la longue, parfois indigeste.
Je ne doute quand même pas que le groupe saura quand même se faire des adeptes sérieux.
