ENEMY OF THE SUN… rien que parce qu’il porte le nom du génialissime album de NEUROSIS, il fallait que je découvre ce que fait ce groupe. Bon, je le dis tout de suite, rien à voir avec la choucroute, mais alors rien du tout. Hein ? Non, avec le baeckeoffe non plus. Mais alors, ENEMY OF THE SUN c’est quoi ? C’est le nouveau groupe de Waldemar Sorychta que l’on connaît sous la casquette de producteur (LACUNA COIL, THERION, SAMAEL…) ou de guitariste (GRIP INC., DESPAIR, EYES OF EDEN). Le garçon a décidé de reformer un groupe dont la base affirmée serait le Thrash, mais un Thrash qui ne se laisserait pas enfermé dans un carcan simple et réducteur. Du coup cela donne une musique hybride qui peut décontenancer à la première écoute mais sur laquelle on prend beaucoup de plaisir dés la seconde.
C’est certain, ceux qui recherchent un nouveau gros groupe de Thrash risquent d’être déçus. Le Thrash est bien présent sur Shadows, mais dans des riffs, rarement sur des morceaux entiers. En effet, ce qu’aime faire le groupe c’est de prendre l’auditeur à contre-pied pour lui faire perdre ses repères. C’est ainsi qu’on se retrouve souvent avec des sonorités Pop Rock qui arrivent juste derrière un bon gros riff bien brutal. Et vous savez quoi ? Cela passe tout seul. Il faut juste s’habituer un peu au début, mais après, ça coule de source. Il faut dire que le tout est savamment amené par la musique, certes, mais aussi par la voix de Jules Näveri. Ce chanteur a de l’or dans la gorge. Il est aussi à l’aise sur un chant gras ou brutal que dans des parties claires aux sonorités Pop indéniables. Bon, lors de « Emptiness », on a eu l’impression que le groupe allait pendre une pente savonneuse de Metalcore éculé, mais ce n’était que pour mieux tromper les auditeurs. Parce que quand on arrive à « Lives Based On Conflicts », on sait déjà que le groupe ne part pas dans cette mauvaise direction. Par contre, dire quelle autre, beaucoup de plaisir à celui qui arriverait à le prédire. Dans ce morceau, on a bien un bon gros riff Thrash bien lourd qui se poursuit par des délires musicaux et vocaux que n’auraient pas renié SERJ TANKIAN sur son album solo. Et les enchainements se feront comme cela tout au long de l’album. Cela passe parfois par des sonorités hispaniques (« Feel The Beating ») ou orientales (« Clearly Surreal »), tout en revenant à cette bonne base Thrash que le groupe semble vouloir afficher coûte que coûte. Et le tout passe véritablement bien.
C’est donc une belle surprise que cet ENEMY OF THE SUN que je recommande à tous ceux qui n’ont rien contre le mélange des genres et qui cherchent un peu de fraîcheur rénovatrice dans un univers Thrash qui s’étouffe.
