Dans ma sélection du club Dial de ce mois ci, l’Italie est décidemment très présente. Après STIGMA, voici la deuxième sortie de REAPERS, et j’avoue que si j’ai eu un peu peur en voyant la pochette qui m’a rappelé au mauvais souvenir de celle de KICK AXE et Rock The World, j’ai été rassuré en écoutant le contenu.
Certes l’ensemble sonne un peu daté, mais je ne fais pas partie du jury de La Nouvelle Star (dommage, sinon Virginie aurait partagé la pasta avec moi…), et la mode m’importe peu, seule la musique prime.
Le son somme toute assez moyen n’empêche pas d’apprécier les qualités intrinsèques d’un groupe qui roule sa bosse depuis 2002, et n’a pas oublié en chemin qu’agressivité peut rimer avec efficacité, et que les mélopées, même dans le Thrash, c’est pas fait pour faire plaisir à tata Yvette.
Le point fort de ce disque est sans conteste l’énorme talent de Stefano Crivellari à la guitare, tant ses interventions harmonieuses vous font décoller de plaisir. Enfin un guitariste qui sait allier hargne et mélodie, et qui parfois nous emmène sur les routes autrefois empruntées par Marty FRIEDMAN dans MEGADETH.
Les titres les plus soft sont bizarrement les meilleurs, et « The Rising Will » ainsi que « Last Days On Earth » sont des joyaux que le TESTAMENT de Practice What You Preach et le METAL CHURCH de The Dark n’auraient pas reniés. L’intro du premier est ciselée à merveille, et les multiples changements de rythme du second sont fort bien troussés.
La voix de Luca sait se faire menaçante quand il le faut, ou cajoleuse quand le rythme ralentit. La section rythmique, même si elle manque un peu d’inventivité, assure le principal et rend l’ensemble compact ou aéré quand le besoin se fait sentir.
Mais les trois musiciens sont trop éclipsés par Stefano, dont le son à des touches du grand SATRIANI, et l’on en vient vite à se focaliser sur lui.
Cette rondelle n’en reste pas moins un très bon moment, et prouve qu’en ce joli mois de juin, l’Italie a mieux à proposer que Del PIERO et ses comparses.
