Il est des décisions que l’on prend sans vraiment savoir pourquoi. Après avoir lu la chronique du premier album de TREPONEM PAL dans Hard-Force, pas vraiment dithyrambique, je me décide à l’acheter. Ayant à l’époque quelques bases en musique Indus, je me réjouissais de l’éveil des groupes français à ce style, et attendais beaucoup de ce disque. En étant pratiquement certain d’être déçu, puisqu’il faut bien l’avouer, les groupes hexagonaux dans les années 80 avaient la fâcheuse tendance de copier les voisins sans talent aucun.
Je reçois le disque en question, le pose sur ma platine, et là, la magie opère…
Je connaissais déjà les SWANS, KILLING JOKE, EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN, SKINNY PUPPY et consorts, les YOUNG GODS commençaient à faire des vagues, mais jamais un album ne m’avait fait cet effet.
En 1988 est né le parfait équilibre entre Indus et Metal, une musique constamment sur le fil du rasoir, prête à imploser à tout instant, au grand plaisir de l’auditeur.
N’écoutez pas les bien-pensants qui vous diront qu’Aggravation est bien meilleur, ou que Higher reste leur chef-d’œuvre, tout est là.
33 petites minutes et puis s’en vont. Le reste n’est que de la redite, ou des tentatives malhabiles de Crossover Dub.
Le supplice de la goutte d’eau venait de trouver son équivalent musical. Je défie quiconque d’écouter le monstrueux « In-Out » sans rien ressentir. De l’agacement. De la passion. De la répulsion. De la fascination.
C’est tout ça en même temps. La voix de Marco vous prend l’échine, la tord dans tous les sens pour voir la déconstruction des sens ravager votre visage. « Low Man », c’est la torture psychologique d’un être arrivé au bout d’un cheminement logique de désespoir. Répétitif, lancinant, comme une idée de suicide mal déguisée. La discordance au service de l’introspection. Pas une note juste. Pas d’échappatoire.
« The Prettiest Star », coup de grisou de fin de face, est la farce de faim. Faim de distorsion, de haine pure, de coups de boutoir. Le trompe-l’œil ultime, pied de nez d’un groupe qui refuse le cloisonnement. « Embodiement Of Frustration », yin et yang terrifiants d’un panorama désolé, guerre interne, internement obligatoire dans la prison de l’esprit. Rauque, acide comme une terre stérile. « The Black Box » est une petite case dans laquelle l’espoir ne peut pas rentrer. Regarde dans cette boite, devine ce qu’il y a à l’intérieur. Il y a « Two Many Humans » déclaration d’intention à laquelle je ne peux qu’adhérer. Trop de monde sur terre. Le genre de discours qu’on ne peut faire qu’en hurlant. Avant de rejoindre le « Silico » qui claudique dans un univers sombre, humide, où on a plus besoin de courir… quand on sait déjà ce qu’il y a à savoir…
