Lorsqu’on apprend que c’est Samoth (EMPEROR, ZYKLON) en personne qui a contacté et recommandé ce groupe au label réputé britannique Candlelight Records, on est légitimement en droit de s’attendre à un groupe de haute qualité eu égard à la carte de visite du guitariste norvégien et a tout ce qu’il a apporté à la scène Black Death. Ce combo inconnu au bataillon en question se nomme DAM, quatuor originaire de Londres existant musicalement depuis 1998.
Le pédigrée de DAM se présente comme suit : trois démos jalonnées d’incessants changements de line-up vraiment pas pratique pour enregistrer des albums dans de bonnes conditions ! Grâce à la main tendue par Samoth, le groupe saisit l’opportunité de mettre sur bande son premier opus Purity The Darwinian Paradox qui reçut l’éloge et les félicitations de plusieurs magazines notoires.
Et une écoute rapide et furtive nous explique très vite ce qui a pu séduire Samoth. Le bougre viking ne s’est pas trompé sur la marchandise. Pas d’arnaque. DAM se révèle être doué et a quelque chose de spécial comme on dit. Le combo anglais se complait à cracher son Black Death moderne, venimeux et saupoudré d’une aura lugubre et désincarnée sur ce second opus The Difference Engine, avec en prime une front cover qui ne paye pas de mine mais qui cache un véritable talent ! Il suffit de gratter en surface pour trouver du matériel de haute facture. Neuf titres complètement décomposés et immatériels, DAM joue avec nos sens, un peu à l’image de leur confrères anglais de AKERCOCKE.
Difficile donc de définir le style des quatre ressortissants de la couronne britannique. Tout juste dira-t-on que leurs arrangements alambiqués s’entremêlent allègrement dans une débauche de noirceur emphatique faite de résonances Black, de brutalité Death, de Doom lancinant et de mouvements progressifs conduits de manière à nous perdre dans les méandres des abysses intemporelles. Sorte de laboratoire d’expérimentation musicale, DAM privilégie la recherche sonore dans ses compositions et dans les sonorités intenses tel qu’on pourra le découvrir dans des morceaux magistraux et imposants comme l’excellente «Eyeballing» volcan de plusieurs univers sonores, «A Wound That Never Heals» à la lourdeur mélodique savamment exécutée ou encore «New Quest», nouvelle quête musicale présentée par DAM. Leurs compositions monstrueuses et cohérentes se rapprocheraient de travaux d’un BLUT AUS NORD national dans un tout autre genre et univers. Un groupe vraiment énigmatique.
Enregistré au prestigieux Eastcote Studios, leur Black Death contemporain (on définira de la sorte leur musique) est en parfaite adéquation avec notre société de consommation froide, synthétique et artificielle. Une nouvelle quête musicale qui ouvre des horizons et de nouvelles perspectives musicales à entrevoir et concevoir. DAM réalise avec ce second opus The Difference Engine un GRAND album. Vivement la suite.
