J’ai toujours comparé In Battle There Is No Law à The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. En ce sens que tous les gens qui ne le connaissent pas, et il y en a un certain nombre, pensent que cet album est un sommet d’ultra violence. Comme tous ceux qui n’ont pas vu le chef d’œuvre de Tobe HOOPER croient qu’il n’est que sang, tripailles et gore non stop.
Halte aux idées reçues, certes BOLT THROWER n’a jamais fait dans la dentelle, et même si il est sorti en pleine vague Grind de la fin des années 80, In Battle… n’a que très peu de choses en commun avec ses contemporains, NAPALM DEATH, CARCASS et autres DOOM ou SORE THROAT.
Ce qui frappe au premier abord, c’est le son. Très étouffé, très grave, très épais. Et après une intro courte mais réussie, on se lance à corps perdu dans les débats. A savoir une double grosse caisse à fond, un son de basse distordu mais presque inexistant, des guitares rythmiques lointaines qui tissent comme un arrière plan pesant et voilé, et des soli réguliers noyés dans l’écho. « Challenge For Power » débute comme un classique de DARK ANGEL, et c’est d’ailleurs un des points intéressants de cet album puisqu’il ressemble à certaines séries B de Thrash US, HEXX ou INDESTROY en tête. Pour ceux qui connaissent, je citerai le lumineux Quest For Sanity, qui ressemble par bien des cotés à In Battle… par son aspect compact et ses rythmes à contretemps.
Mais BOLT THROWER, c’est aussi du lourd de chez lourd, et une simple écoute du monstrueux « Forgotten Existence » suffit à s’en rendre compte. Des breaks pesants, des reprises atomiques, c’est la marque de fabrique du groupe.
Cela dit, le tempo général reste relativement rapide, soyons honnête, rapidité accentuée par la durée assez courte des morceaux. Mais l’épitomé de cet album reste le monumental « Concession Of Pain », qui était aussi le titre de leur deuxième démo, et qui illustre à merveille le style des BOLT à leurs débuts, avec son alternance de couplets à l’enclume et de breaks à la machette.
Ce qui a rebuté le public, en dehors de la tromperie sur la marchandise et du son hermétique, c’est sans doute aussi la voix assez particulière de Karl, très éloignée des standards du style, ni hurlée, ni stridente, mais qui colle parfaitement à l’ambiance générale.
Pour résumer, je dirais que si In Battle Terre Is No Law est loin d’être le meilleur album de BOLT THROWER (Real Of Chaos remplit bien mieux cet office selon moi), il reste une curiosité intéressante dans la carrière du groupe anglais, au même titre que Lost Paradise pour PARADISE LOST.
Cela dit, maintenant, le plus dur va être de le dénicher…
