DUG PINNICK est bien sur un des nombreux projets parallèles de Doug PINNICK, bassiste chanteur des merveilleux KING’S X, et il nous prouve une fois de plus toute l’étendue de son talent. Si il est un groupe qui n’a jamais eu la chance qu’il méritait dans le monde merveilleux du Hard-Rock, c’est bien le trio de Houston. Pendant des années, ils nous ont livré des œuvres magnifiques, fines et racées, mais comme toute musique un tant soit peu originale et classieuse, les ventes n’ont pas été à la hauteur.
Peut on faire pencher la balance de l’histoire du bon côté ? Rien n’est moins sur, et KING’S X rejoindra sans doute les rangs de ces groupes maudits, condamnés à un succès d’estime, et à l’amour inconditionnel de ses fans.
Peu importe, le principal est de se faire plaisir, et de faire plaisir au public. Et avec ce somptueux Strum Sum Up, la mission est accomplie. Les titres sont de qualité, et le groove prime, marque de fabrique de Doug s’il en est. Le principe de proposer deux parties pour un même titre sur au moins la moitié de l’album est très ingénieux, et de concept, on passe vite à la sensation que le groupe a voulu nous faire pénétrer dans leur intimité musicale, en se mettant à nu. Loin d’être pénibles, ces digressions apportent au contraire une nouvelle dimension aux titres concernés, et la jam constituant la seconde partie est purement jouissive, capturant un feeling live extraordinaire.
Les morceaux s’enchaînent, et nous sommes rapidement entraînés dans un monde fait de rythmiques simples, presque dépouillées, mais qui vont à l’essentiel. On retrouve par moments ces harmonies très BEATLES qui définissaient l’univers des KINGS, à l’occasion de « Hostile World », ou encore de « Life Is What You Make It ». Les 10 minutes de « Coming Over » ne sont que Funk peinard, car l’homme n’a plus rien à prouver de ce côté-là. La voix chaude et grave de Doug fait le reste, avec ses modulations et ses impulsions soul, et la pilule passe comme une coupe de champagne lors d’une soirée de gala.
14 titres, c’est un minimum pour une musique de cette envergure, et si je puis me permettre un conseil d’ami, mettez l’album dans la platine, asseyez vous dans un fauteuil confortable, avec votre boisson préférée à portée de main, écoutez et fermez les yeux.
Vous y êtes, c’est l’univers de PINNICK qui s’ouvre devant vous.
