Steve STEVENS. Jamais entendu parler ? « Rebel Yell » du peroxydé Billy IDOL, c’était lui. Le premier album solo de Vince NEIL, il était là. Steve STEVENS ATOMIC PLAYBOYS ? Aussi. BOZZIO/LEVIN/STEVENS, dans le mille.
Autant dire que le gus a un CV aussi fourni que la foune de Pamela ANDERSON en morpions. On en a dit des tonnes sur le Steve, qu’il était plus flashy visuellement que guitaristiquement. Que son talent était aussi limité que sa coiffure était ridicule. Mais peu importe, le mec est Rock.
Pour les plus jeunes d’entre vous, Stevie, c’est Steve VAÏ/Steve JONES à lui tout seul. Le coté flambeur de l’un, et l’attitude de l’autre. Rien à foutre. Il est là depuis trop longtemps pour s’en soucier. Alors il joue. Et c’est ce qu’il fait de mieux.
Certes, Memory Crash n’a plus le glitter des années 80, cette façon de regarder le public en se foutant de sa gueule, mais la pêche est toujours là.
Les compos ne trompent pas, il bouffe à tous les râteliers, mais avec une élégance trash qui force le respect. J’arrive à la fête, je prends whiskey sur petits fours, et je vomis sur la tôlière, mais le lendemain, j’envoie des fleurs !
Tiens, par exemple, « Hellcats Take The Highway », c’est « Summer Song » de SATRIANI, version hype. « Day Of The Eagle », c’est bluesy comme un stetson, mais c’est lourd comme du SABBATH. « Water On Ares », c’est la guitare acoustique qui prend le relais des mains sur les courbes d’une conquête d’un soir. L’intro hispanisante de « Small Arms Fire », c’est le bisou de bonne nuit à la jackass avant de fracasser la tête du pote avec une vieille Ovation pourrie. Du Heavy qui suinte la crédibilité, une balade sur les boulevards la porte ouverte pour te râper la joue sur le bitume. Et ces syncopes rythmiques man, ça tue pas peut être ?
« Prime Mover » à le groove d’un vieux détective privé downtown, traquant le mari adultère en fouinant dans les rades louches, une clope au bec. La basse pue le mégot mal éteint avec sa disto crade, et les riffs ont des airs de fonds de verres pas très clean. Les arrangements font le reste pour l’ambiance des néons jaunis. Et on se finit en after avec le sublimissime « Josephine », plein d’émotion, chant feutré, arpèges délicats et piano discret. Une perle parmi les perles.
Non, je suis désolé, mais j’ai toujours aimé le bonhomme. Et ça n’est pas Memory Crash qui me fera changer d’avis. C’est une journée qu’on commence avec sa femme, au réveil, avec sa peau satinée, et puis le soir venu, on part faire la fête avec ses potes, et s’enquiller des margaritas, avant de revenir at home, embrasser sa fille et la regarder dormir.
Ce que la vie devrait toujours être.
