Débarquant directement d’Allemagne, WARHAMMER est un quartet vieux de 14 ans dont l’esprit était de rendre un hommage abouti aux suisses d’HELLHAMMER. Pratiquant un « blackened » Death Metal lorgnant sur le Thrash, tout comme leurs compères helvètes, les allemands ne se sont jamais cachés de tout faire pour "plagier" HELLHAMMER. C’est dans cet esprit qu’ils livrent en 2002 leur quatrième album, Curse Of The Absolute Eclipse. Doté d’une pochette d’un banal affligeant (le nom du groupe, le nom de l’album et entre les deux une sorte de gribouillis indéchiffrable où les yeux les plus observateurs pourront reconnaître une sorte de tête de mort et un pentacle à huit branches) et labélisé par Nuclear Blast, l’opus démarre plutôt bien. Un son de cloche et un solo d’orgue intriguant viennent clairement annoncer le déroulement proche d’une messe noire. Une violente distorsion suivie d’un hurlement long et douloureux arrivent et lâchent les chevaux. Sur un rythme très lent, ce Curse Of The Absolute Eclipse démarre laissant augurer une suite plaisante. La confirmation ne tarde pas puisque dès le deuxième titre, on se retrouve plongés au cœur d’une lutte acharnée entre, bien évidemment, le Bien et le Mal.
Jusque là, WARHAMMER arrive à capter notre attention avec une entrée en matière soignée. L’album suit son cours et là… c’est le drame. Les huit titres suivants ne sont qu’une vaste plaisanterie. Les allemands lâchent prise et tombent dans une platitude rarement écoutée. Toutes les pistes démarrent par une distorsion infecte et forcée qui donne une impression de remplissage. Aucune variation rythmique, aucune variation vocale, des riffs lassants et, selon le bootleg, une basse dont nous n’avons toujours aucunes nouvelles. Les minutes semblent durer des heures tellement on s’ennuie. Pas même l’instrumentale pourtant apaisante mais casée "au petit bonheur la chance" entre deux pistes ne relève le niveau.
Finalement il faudra attendre la fin de ce scud pour entrevoir un dernier hâle de soleil puisque « The Claw Of Religion », l’antépénultième titre est assez plaisant.
En conclusion, WARHAMMER qui se targue ouvertement de copier HELLHAMMER livre une bien triste prestation que les inconditionnels des fougueux suisses prendront sans aucun doute comme un affront.
