On vous a souvent répété que les lendemains de cuite devaient être abordés d’une manière radicale, histoire de faire dégager par la porte principale les effets de la gueule de bois qui vous serrent la tête dans un étau impitoyable. Le mal par le mal en sorte, gin sur gin, vodka sur vodka, ne tentez pas les mélanges sous peine de finir dans un état bien pire que la veille.
Ce système est aussi valable en ce qui concerne la musique, si vous vous êtes couchés avec une bonne dose de Grind qui détériore les neurones, ne posez pas le pied par terre avant d’avoir abreuvé vos esgourdes avec du sévère.
Ceci expliquant cela, je tiens à préciser tout de suite que LIGHT PUPIL DILATE est tout sauf du Grind. De là à pouvoir définir leur musique en quelques lignes, il y a un grand pas que je ne franchirais pas. La bio succincte est claire, LPD est un creuset d’influences qui au final aboutit à une mixture des plus digeste, et surtout enthousiasmante.
Le duel des vocalistes est émulateur, chargé en émotions, du mélodique pur à la grogne en bonne et due forme, et couvre ainsi une palette d’émotions empêchant le CD de tomber dans la monotonie. Les nappes de guitares, parfois sous mixées et enchevêtrées, tissent un tissu harmonique ondulant qui n’est pas sans rappeler les ténors de l’Emo-core, de MILK à FUGAZI, mais l’élasticité de la section rythmique, diablement inventive est là pour rappeler que cette nouvelle scène ne souhaite pas se laisser enfermer dans un carcan de références.
Les titres se succèdent à vitesse grand V, et à aucun moment le spectre de l’ennui ne semble capable de pointer le bout de son nez. On sent parfois quelques relents de Stoner light, comme sur « Poly Viral », sonnant comme du DOWN dernière époque, ou EYEHATEGOD dans ses moments les plus light.
« Big Open » et « Selfless » éthérés mais pourtant drus nous entraînent dans une cavalcade de sentiments contraires et complémentaires, privilégiant autant le fond que la forme, telle une complainte impossible née d’un désir de ne pas sombrer dans les us et coutumes imposés. « Phlebitis » durcit un peu le ton, sans pour autant laisser la trame générale sur le bas coté. « Shower Me With Your Love » destructure le plan, avec ses contretemps inopinés et ses vocaux écorchés et tombe à pic pour relancer l’attention aux 2/3 de l’album. Le tempo quasi rock de « Boundary Dissolution » fait se rencontrer HELMET et les premiers DANZIG au milieu d’un banquet de maniaques du rythme déconstruit, avant qu’un break totalement incontrôlé clôture les débats avec fermeté.
« Dive » ne devient alors qu’une formalité sans être bâclée, salon de thé pour VIP de luxe, ou Scott WEILAND tape le carton avec un Eddie VEDDER particulièrement éméché.
Ce qui nous ramène aux conseils initiaux.
Sauf que pour trouver demain une mixture capable de vous remettre d’aplomb après une cure de LIGHT PUPIL DILATE tiendra de la gageure !
