Quand on chronique des albums, on reçoit d’un peu de tout. Cela va du très bon au passable et parfois même du nul à chier. La dernière catégorie est fuit comme la peste. Par contre, quand on arrive à tomber sur une bonne surprise, cela fait toujours plaisir. Surtout quand on n’attendait rien de particulier de cette écoute. Avec EMIL BULLS, je dois dire que j’ai été agréablement surpris. Pourtant, l’intro qui donne son nom à l’album, bruitiste au possible, ne sert pas à grand-chose et « To End All Wars », le premier vrai titre, ne restera pas dans les annales. Par contre, quand on arrive à « The Most Evil Spell », l’oreille se fait plus attentive et notre esprit est happé par la musique des allemands. C’est une musique hybride qui nous est proposée. Lourde et grave dans le ton, elle est aussi grasse par le son. Pourtant, la production est impeccable et les effets un peu crades sont voulus et maîtrisés. Ils ajoutent même une dimension supplémentaire à une musique qui aurait pu, sinon, passer pour un énième clone de Metalcore sans saveur. Et pourtant, de la saveur, la musique d’EMIL BULLS n’en manque pas. A part les titres précités et « Close To The Wind » et « Worlds Appart », tous les autres apportent une nouvelle pierre agréable sinon vraiment jouissive à cet album surprenant. Pour moi, le summum est atteint avec le titre « 10050 », dont la rythmique saccadée et hachurée m’a fait penser à du PRIMUS version gros Metal qui tâche. Parce que des tâches, vous en aurez sur vos habits, sans aucun doute. EMIL BULLS, c’est du lourd, du qui fait mal. Il ne faut pas se fier aux passages à la voix claire. Il ne faut pas se fier à des ressemblances qu’il pourrait y avoir avec du Metalcore bien gentil. Ici, la voix claire est déjà maîtrisée et placée d’une manière réfléchie, sans chercher à faire chichi. Qu’elle soit là pour le refrain où durant les couplets pour appuyer un refrain dévastateur (« All In Tune With The Universe »), elle est toujours là où il faut. Et je dois dire que j’ai été vraiment surpris par la performance de Christoph von Freydorf. Ce gars-là en a dans le buffet et sous le pied pour nous tenir en haleine. Ses comparses ne sont pas en reste et le tout forme une musique intelligente qui, si elle ne cherche pas l’alambiqué à tous les coins de riff, possède une puissance et une sincérité telle qu’on ne peut y rester insensible.
En tous cas, voici une excellente surprise venu d’Allemagne. Une alternative à ce qui nous inonde habituellement. Un nom à retenir.
