Dans la série des albums cult dont il faut avoir dans sa discographie de disques noirs, je voudrais citer le groupe italien de Black Metal Dépressif ou suicidaire (au choix) FORGOTTEN TOMB avec son premier album Songs To Leave. A la base, FORGOTTEN TOMB est le groupe d'une seule personne et même personne, Herr Morbid, puis il s’est avéré par le futur que le bonhomme s’est entouré de musicien pour pouvoir assouvir son projet de jouer sa musique sur scène.
Sorti à l’origine en août 2002 sur le défunt label suédois Selbstmord Services (label du leader de SHINING : Kvarforth), cet album fut réédité par Adipocere début 2005. A l’époque, la musique des italiens évoluait dans un registre très Black Metal dépressif et suicidaire avec des passages pouvant rappeler un Doom très funéraire accouplé à des moments très glauques. Les compos sont de très haut niveau et une personnalité inimitable surgit du fin fonds des ténèbres : musicalement, le groupe oscille entre BURZUM, DOLORIAN et KATATONIA avec des sonorités misanthropiques propres à MAYHEM sur son mythique album De Mysteris Dom Sathanas.
Le mouvement BLACK dépressif se crée avec SHINING, LEVIATHAN ou KROHM, qui se caractérise par des tempos lourds, très lent par moments, malgré quelques accélérations furtives. Le chant se veut inhumain, maladif, provenant de douleurs atroces… les titres en deviennent nauséabonds. « Entombed By Winter » montre que le groupe est sur une pente raide qui mène à l’inévitable, dans un trou noir total. Les riffs de guitares, le chant, la basse, la batterie, tout est terrifiant, sombre mais à la fois puissant.
« No Way Out » et « Disheartenment » sont des marches funéraires nécessaires à l’anéantissement. Renforcé avec Springtime Depression sorti un an après, ces deux albums (avec Songs To Leave donc) sont les pierres angulaires des fondations d’une tombe majestueuse sans nom. Ce premier opus n’est pas immédiatement assimilable, mais une fois que la galette se met à tourner, elle ronge le cerveau pour devenir une maladie incurable dont on ne veut pas se passer ! Songs To Leave est donc le premier volet d’une trilogie achevée en apothéose par Love’s Burial Ground en 2004, car Negative Megalomania, le quatrième opus du groupe se démarque en intégrant du chant clair et en proposant des passages moins sombres. FORGOTTEN TOMB délaisse peu à peu les atmosphères oppressantes pour entrevoir la lumière et laisse tomber petit à petit le coté dépressif de sa musique si présent sur ses premiers opus.
