Malgré les deux mots qui forment le nom du groupe, il faut bien dire que l’association des deux fait un jeu de mot assez pourri… Surtout pour un groupe qui évolue dans une veine musicale brutale. Mais bon, faut-il s’arrêter au nom d’un groupe pour juger sa musique ? Je serais tenté de dire non… mais on pourrait faire une exception de temps en temps ?
BLOODJINN est un groupe qui a tous les ingrédients actuels pour faire un bon disque. Une production qui déchire et grâce à laquelle on peut distinctement entendre tous les éléments des morceaux, une musique bien comme il faut et tout à fait dans les canons actuels… peut-être un peu trop. Ce n’est pas forcément leur faute si tout le monde semble sortir le même disque en ce moment. Mais à trop vouloir utiliser les ingrédients qui font recette, on se noie dans une massez énorme et dont il est difficile de sortir la tête aujourd’hui. Les gros riffs, tout le monde connaît. La grosse prod, tout le monde connaît. De la grosse caisse en veux-tu en voilà, tout le monde connaît. D’ailleurs, les groupes savent-ils encore faire des morceaux sans abuser de cet outil ? Même si j’adore la double, je dois bien dire que d’entendre des groupes qui ne peuvent s’en passer ne serait-ce que cinq secondes, ça devient un peu lassant à la longue. Pourtant, quand elle est utilisée sciemment sur des parties rythmiques chiadées, c’est du bonheur. On peut citer certains courts passages de « Maker », ou encore l’introduction de « In The First Degree ». Là, c’est du tout bon. Mais en mettre partout, ça fait remplissage. Il va falloir commencer à épurer un peu tout cela, n’est-il pas ?
Mais le plus gros problème de ce This Machine Runs On Empty, c’est le chant. Là où on s’attendrait à trouver des growls surpuissants on se retrouve avec un chant screamo à la limité du supportable. Mais, à la rigueur, c’est un choix artistique. Pourquoi pas. Mais la voix de Joel Collins ne tient pas la route et lutte pour prendre le train en marche. Du coup, il peine… et nous avec.
