Si l'on visite le site de FURY'N' GRACE, on y apprend que ces derniers composent d'abord pour eux-mêmes, et non pour un quelconque public, qu'ils ne cherchent pas à être compris et qu'ils n'ont que faire de toute interprétation ou critique de leurs œuvres. Le label nous ayant fait parvenir leur cd, nous nous plierons toutefois à l'usage. Le combo revendique cette image de l'artiste maudit en rappelant qu'avant Tales Of The Grotesque And The Arabesque, ils avaient déjà enregistré deux albums mais qui n'avaient pas trouvé preneur. Bien que le titre reprenne celui d'un recueil de nouvelles d'Edgar Allan Poe – Histoires grotesques et sérieuses en français – il n'est pas question ici de concept album, le groupe s'affirmant d'ailleurs comme anti-concept (on pourra toujours leur rétorquer que rejeter toute forme de concept est en soi une démarche conceptuelle...). Si les Italiens s'affirment maîtres dans l'art du break inattendu – avec des compos qui atteignent parfois les 16 minutes, ils ont il est vrai tout le temps pour cela – il existe bien, ne leur en déplaise, certains thèmes musicaux qui reviennent de manière récurrente et assurent une homogénéité à l'ensemble. Le Prog, avec une basse bien présente, laisse parfois la place à l'Expérimental (« Coma ») mais difficile de ne pas être touché par cette fresque musicale qui se construit à mesure que les minutes s'écoulent. Gabrielle Grilli, au timbre de voix proche de notre Joe Amore national (NIGHTMARE), use et abuse des vibratos, mais ce chant illustre comme il faut cette juxtaposition entre le grotesque et l'arabesque. Nos voisins transalpins n'hésitent pas parfois à en faire un peu trop et même si la dramaturgie l'emporte par moments sur la mélancolie, le résultat est là et autant dire que celui-ci est particulièrement convaincant.
