SJODOGG est le nom norvégien d’une maladie ne touchant que les moutons… mais il ne faut pas s’inquiéter, ce combos n’est pas le rejeton malade d’un troupeau conduis à l’abattoir ! Venant du plus profond de l’underground, SJODOGG est une entité formé par Espen Simonsen qui est un ancien membre du groupe Death THE FLESH dans les années 1990, et de personnes ayant officiées dans CREST OF DARKNESS.
Après 3 Démos sans nom et totalement Underground, SJODOGG se retrouve signé sur le Label français Osmose grâce au soutien et aux recommandations de Dk Deviant d’ARKHON INFAUSTUS. Landscapes Of Desease And Decadence serait le ré-enregistrement de deux des trois démos que le groupe a sorti.
Les premières impressions de minimalisme dans les compositions de ce premier opus demeurent très succinctes : aux premières écoutes, l’ensemble semble dépourvu, dénudé, où le old-school est de rigueur. Pourtant tout cela est faux : les compositions sont très recherchées pour aboutir à des structures très complexes. Certes l’utilisation des instruments reste simple, il ne faut pas s’attendre à des prouesses techniques, ni à l’utilisation d’artifices superflus.
Le mélange des genres est attractif en ce moment et bien SJODOGG aime jouer sur l’ambiguïté : tantôt Black, tantôt Death, ce premier opus navigue dans les eaux troubles d’une musique extrême ombrageuse. La performance de Vulnus au chant est digne d’un Kanwulf de SHINING où il arrive à faire passer des émotions par les différentes formes de chants utilisées : hurlé, cassé, murmuré, agonisant, vomissant une bile nauséabonde…Utilisée comme un instrument à part entière et associée en harmonie avec les guitares et les autres instruments, cela donne un résultat sombre et inhabituel. Les nombreux passages acoustiques rendent les 10 titres obscurs tout en permettant une diversité souvent oubliée. Ces break sonnent idéalement au sein de la furie de riffs obscures ou furieux que comporte Landscapes Of Desease And Decadence. SJODOGG voulait nous glacer devant le minimalisme et la froideur de sa musique, mais il est impossible de rester de marbre à l’écoute de morceaux comme « Inglorious Fever Of Antonius », « Kiss Of The Blowfly » ou encore « Mahapaatra ».
Il est rare et précieux de trouver une si propre personnalité dès l’enregistrement d’un premier album. Même s’il ne révolutionnera pas le monde du Metal Extreme, Landscapes Of Desease And Decadence a le mérite de créer un univers particulier et oppressant, mais surtout unique.
