Qu'est ce que c'est que cette histoire? Ce n'est pas WATCHA, le chant est en anglais sur le CD! .. Ah... AH.. OK. D'accord, c'est le nouveau style du groupe. Je ne peux pas dire que ça craint, ce n'est pas objectif... Allez si je le dit : ça craint! Fini le chant percussif si caractéristique de nos pionners de la vague Neo Metal franchouillarde (aux côtés de PLEYMO et MASS HYSTERIA notamment), fini les jeux de sonorités sur la langue française à coups de textes incisifs et bien pensés. Ce qui était la marque de fabrique, le signe distinctif des parisiens, n'est plus. Quel coup dur! J'ai été tenté de leur lancer une seule pauvre étoile en d'en finir là pour cette chronique.
Mais ce serait trop bref, ce n'est pas professionnel. Penchons-nous donc sur la section rythmique, récemment renouvelé au sein du line-up (mais que reste-t-il alors du WATCHA originel ?). Les Frenchies délivrent toujours une musique catchy, bien dans l'esprit de ce que le groupe avait l'habitude de produire. Pourtant on note une belle évolution dans les structures, et des tempos plus posés. WATCHA a peut-être perdu de sa rage d'antan, mais a su garder une partie de son énergie. Peu à peu, une fois la déception de la perte chant si novateur passée, on se laisse prendre par les mélodies, les refrains faciles à retenir et toujours les passages hardcore qui nous font headbanger. L'énigmatique Sam, personnage redondant de l'univers WATCHA, est de retour dans sa version 5, sur les titres « Sam 5 » et « Sam La Voie Des Ténèbres ». « Sam 5 » détone, très tournée vers le Death à l'intro, puis revient sur des sentiers plus connus avec un chant en français, toujours le « Miroir, beau miroir, dis moi ce que je fais là... ». Les thèmes principaux de la chanson originale des années 90 sont repris, déstructurés, torturés pour transformer totalement la chanson en un son assez chaotique. « Bogeyman », « Bastard Being » et « Rock'n'Roll Kids » sont dans le plus pur esprit WATCHA, impossible de s'y méprendre, alors que d'autres titres tels « The Way Side » ou « One For The Money » sont plus surprenant, plus Metalcore et plus sombres.
WATCHA a décidé de tourner un page du livre de son histoire ici. Le chant en anglais est une grosse perte d'identité pour le groupe à mon sens, c'est ce qui l'a vraiment démarqué des autres au début. Pourtant on retrouve toujours sur les refrains la tonalité caractéristique des voix, celles-ci sont mieux posées, plus tranquilles mais encore diablement efficace. Les aficionados de longue date ne s'y retrouveront peut-être pas. Pour ce qui est de nouveau auditeurs, le groupe pourrait happer des amateurs de TOOL ou COAL CHAMBER, ayant passé plus ou moins à la trappe ses phrasés Hip-Hop et Hardcore. L'avenir nous dira si « Falling By The Way Side » est un succès ou non!
