2 ans après Shadows Are Security, voici de retour nos ricains d'AS I LAY DYING. Quoi de neuf dans le nouveau monde ? Et bien pas grand chose. Les quatre compères s'en tiennent à leur ligne de conduite, à savoir un chant Hardcore, un musique très Death dans l'âme et emplie de jolies mélodies. Petit rappel, le groupe fait partie de ce nouveau style représenté par KILLSWITCH ENGAGE et consort. Certains diront du Metal pour midinettes, mais qui plaît également à leur boutonneux de copains.
Et je ne peux que remarquer au premier abord que ce stéréotype leur convient assez bien! Des mosh parts, des refrains doux et mélodiques, et même un semblant de balade (comme « I Never Wanted » par exemple). Pourtant j'ai toujours bien noté AS I LAY DYING et je continuerais. Parce que le groupe ne propose rien d'exceptionnel certes, les mélodies sont plutôt convenues et les blasts assez communs. Mais ce mélange savamment dosé fait son effet, et c'est avec grand plaisir que l'on écoute un album pareil. Par exemple c'est le genre d'opus qui vous empêche de tuer quelqu'un quand on vous annonce un métro sur dix. Ou bien de poser une bombe quand vous rentrez chez vous vers minuit et que vous vous apercevez que le digicode de votre porte a été changé dans la journée. L'alternance entre brutalité et douceur est vraiment fluide, à aucun moment on ne peut en avoir trop plein les oreilles, ou au contraire s'ennuyer sur des parties trop molles.
« Separation » introduit l'album tout en émotion, une mélodie douce et lointaine, sur fond de parasites vinyles, puis l'harmonie survient, laissant entendre que l'explosion est imminente... Et là démarre « Nothing Left ». Comme je l'ai dit, vous devinez la fin de mélodie des les premières notes, cela s'inscrit en vous. Rien de bien sorcier, comme une Techno hypnotisante, vous rentrez tout de suite dans le morceau. On a droit aux moshs, au refrain entêtant et aux soli assez bien pensés. « An Ocean Between Us » est un des titres les plus efficaces, un des plus rapides. En deux ans, le groupe a su progresser, améliorant ses riffs guitare mieux inspirés, plus complets, et Tim Lambesis hurle et chante avec ses tripes, sans déborder pour autant. Les titres s'enchaînent ensuite sans surprise aucune, mais l'énergie est bien présente, c'est tout ce qu'on demande. La fin de l'album retient un peu plus mon attention avec « Departed », interlude instrumental (guitaristique dirais-je même), et « Wrath Upon Ourselves » qui va lécher des côtes plus brutales et plus sombres...
On Ocean Between Us n'est pas un album d'anthologie, AS I LAY DYING ne sera jamais un groupe de premier plan, mais diable que cela peut faire du bien pour décompresser!! C'est un album de vacances, pour ne pas se prendre la tête et apprécier pleinement 40 minutes de détente!
