Est-il encore utile de présenter Ken HENSLEY ? Bon, un petit effort pour les plus jeunes d’entre vous, ce monsieur n’est autre que le clavier des mythiques URAIH HEEP, mais si vous connaissez, « Easy Livin’ », repris par WASP sur Inside The Electric Circus ! Bon, puisque vous n’êtes pas décidés, tant pis pour vous. Ce groupe bénéficie d’une incroyable côte de popularité en Allemagne par exemple, et sort toujours des DVD à la pelle !
Mais ici, point question de l’ensemble, mais de Ken seul. Il a déjà prouvé par le passé qu’il n’avait besoin de personne pour réaliser de bons albums, et une fois de plus, le résultat est impeccable. Certes ; l’homme n’est pas fou, et a su s’entourer ici de chanteurs de premier plan pour assurer les parties vocales de ce concept album. Décidemment dans l’air du temps, le concept de concept (redondance, quand tu nous tiens !) est devenu presque monnaie courante de nos jours, et tous les musiciens semblent avoir une histoire passionnante à raconter. Nous voilà face une fois encore à la sempiternelle histoire de jeune apprenti rock-star qui va se retrouver confronté à la dure loi du business (qui a dit The Crimson Idol ? Tiens, encore WASP…), mais qui va apprendre de ses erreurs et triompher philosophiquement à la fin. L’originalité de la théorie n’ayant d’égal que la finesse du traitement, concentrons nous plutôt sur la musique, qui elle, est fameuse.
Comme je l’ai dit un peu plus haut, niveau chanteur, le père HENSLEY n’a pas plaisanté. Avoir sur le même album deux pointures à la voix de velours comme Glenn HUGHES et Jorn LANDE, c’est la moitié de la partie gagnée. Si en plus, les organes de ces messieurs sont au service de morceaux conséquents, c’est l’apothéose.
On n’en est pas loin. Même si tous les titres du CD ne sont pas inoubliables, nous avons quand même droit à un joli festival pour claviers, guitares et voix. Ainsi, « We’re On Our Way » et « You’ve Got It », dynamisés par la voix de Jorn, sonnent très FM, mais avec une puissance de tir appréciable. « Think Twice », mélancoliquement menée par Eve Gallagher, artiste méconnue du grand public mais pas dénuée de talent, bien au contraire, donne dans la demie ballade sympathique, « (Okay) This House Is Down » assume ses influences boogie dans la grande lignée du meilleur HEEP, ou encore le très AOR « What You Gonna Do », ou le toujours vert Glenn nous montre qu’il n’a rien perdu de ses capacités, font toutes partie du haut du panier. On peut rajouter dans sa besace les deux très beaux moments offerts par le maître en personne, « There Comes A Time », avec son solo de saxo alto magnifique, et le final « The Last Dance » et ses arrangements de cordes somptueux. De plus, Ken prouve qu’il n’a pas grand-chose à envier aux deux ténors précités au niveau de l’interprétation, sa voix étant parfaitement délicieuse.
En faisant les comptes de près, et si l’on excepte les deux interludes de quelques secondes, les deux tiers de cet album sont recommandables, ce qui nous fait donc une bonne moyenne à l’arrivée. Seul souci, la faiblesse de la production, qui handicape grandement le produit global, qui aurait pu se hisser quelques crans plus hauts.
Mais ne faisons pas la fine bouche, et remercions le ciel que des musiciens de la trempe de Ken HENSLEY ne se décident pas à partir à la retraite !
