Vingt et un ans que Nocturno Culto et son fidèle complice Fenriz assènent leur Black Metal nihiliste et minimaliste directement sorti des forêts et pics du grand Nord norvégien. Mais tout n’a pas toujours sonné comme les derniers opus actuels que le duo nous sert depuis quelques temps déjà. En effet, à la suite de leur premier album Soulside Journey, du Death Metal pour préciser, DARKTHRONE fut l’un des premiers groupes à faire usage des fameux «corpse paints». Formation influente dans le milieu Black Metal norvégien des années 90, des albums comme A Blaze in The Northern Sky ont ouvert les portes du genre à de nombreux groupes adeptes d’un style musical nouveau pour l’époque: du Metal cradingue, ouvertement maladroit, simpliste, sinistre, et à la production délibérément mauvaise. Oubliés les «corpse paints» et blastbeats qui trouvent plus leurs faveurs dans le Black, ce douzième essai de l’entité nordique résonne plus comme un vibrant hommage à la scène NWOBHM et au Punk en général.
Sans pour autant être détaché de leurs racines Black Metal, DARKTHRONE adopte sur ces albums un son définitivement plus Black’n’Roll, surtout depuis Hate Them sorti en 2002. DARKTHRONE nourri au Punk des années 80 par de grands groupes de la trempe de GBH, DISCHARGE ou POISON IDEA ! Se voulant plus matures que de par le passé, Nocturno Culto et Fenriz nous balancent leur albums chaque années, sans se prendre la tête. Attitude Rock’nRoll, désinvolture et impertinence au possible ! DARKTHRONE reste DARKTHRONE, le seul groupe qui a fait plus d’albums que de concerts dans le monde !
La batterie sonne comme une casserole toute cabossée et les riffs lépreux de Nocturno Culto nous rappellent au bon vieux temps du Rock Punk. D’ailleurs, les neuf morceaux ornant ce Fuck Off And Die (F.O.A.D.) sont là pour nous rappeler que nous avons tous des racines Rock et Punk, cela en tant qu’amateur de Metal en général. La pochette dessinée par Dennis Dread illustre quant à elle le propos des textes et musiques de DAKTHRONE. Une fois n’est pas coutume, le groupe suggère un album de plus de quarante minutes, avec des pistes assez longues et arrangées. On retiendra surtout des titres majeurs tels que «These Shores Are Damned», «Canadian Metal», et la très groovy «Pervertor of the Seven Gates» ! L’occultisme a toujours la main mise dans les paroles du combo norvégien ! Nocturno Culto aime de plus plaquer des minis soli dans ces morceaux amorçant des breaks rapides et percutants.
Autre point montrant l’amour que le duo porte au Heavy Metal en général : le duo joint dans le livret une petite liste non exhaustive de grands albums de grands groupes comme AGENT STEEL, CIRTITH UNGOL, MERCYFUL FATE, REPULSION, BLACK SABBATH ou MAYHEM, etc. Un groupe qui aime décidément partager son amour du Metal généraliste.
Une carrière riche en albums et en productions coups de poing. F .O.A.D. n’est certainement pas le meilleur opus mais avec DARKTHRONE on n’est rarement dépité et désenchanté. Le son DARKTHRONE est une marque de fabrique. Dans la droite lignée de ces prédécesseurs, un tantinet en dessous niveau inspiration et percussion, il n’en reste pas moins que ce Fuck Off and Die est un album de qualité dans le genre.
