Parfois, alors que l’on croit avoir tout entendu, on tombe sur la petite pépite qui fait douter l’espace d’un instant, et qui fait que l’on se pose la question fatidique : et si il me restait encore des choses à découvrir ? Je pensais maladroitement qu’en matière de Death Metal, tout avait été dit une fois, dix fois, cent fois, mais j’avais bien tort. A l’image d’une équipe d’Angleterre agonisante en début de coupe, la perfide Albion se réveille, et nous balance derechef une nouveauté décapante, qui mérite qu’on s’y arrête quelque peu.
Certains d’entre vous, plus directement concernés par le style que moi (il est vrai que j’ai arrêté l’étude approfondie du style il y a un bon moment !) ne comprendront pas la raison de mon enthousiasme. Il est plausible que la musique de TED MAUL ne représente rien de révolutionnaire pour vous, mais je vous rassure, ça n’est pas le coté expérimental de l’objet qui m’a fasciné, mais plutôt l’aptitude du groupe à créer un équilibre global en faisant le grand écart entre plusieurs composantes disparates.
On se retrouve au final avec White Label, un album dont le mélange de pur Death, d’électro, d’indus et de Metal frôle la perfection. Les titres s’enchaînent, et, comble de trahison pour les uns, de surprise pour les autres, la différenciation entre eux s’effectue naturellement, au point de pouvoir les reconnaître sans aucune difficulté.
Exemple, le morceau introductif, un des meilleurs, « Forest…With This Memory Of A Free Festival », ou bien le très long et conclusif « For The Innocent » qui débute comme un mix infernal de Goldie, soudain agrémenté de riffs que n’auraient pas renié MORBID ANGEL sonnent comme des odes désespérées à la créativité agressive.
Le reste de l’album ne doit rien au hasard non plus, tels le pesant « Lo Mas Negativo », le dissonant « A Catalog Of Wasted Opportunities », le pur techno et tripant « 200 Db’s Down », le quasi Soilworkien « A Plan To Rob The Soul », l’ambiant « Extricate The Macrocosm » ou encore le massacre total de « And We Tolerate The Sickness ».
Franchement, je franchis le pas, et n’hésite pas à parler de révélation en ce qui concerne TED MAUL, car plus que les amateurs de la bête crée jadis par feu Chuck SHULDINER, cet album à de quoi séduire une audience avide de sensations nouvelles, union pas si indigente que ça entre un style barbare et des arrangements léchés.
Si vous avez une heure à consacrer à un album ces jours ci, n’hésitez pas (après évidemment vous être jetés sur celui de DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA !!!), achetez White Label, et si vous êtes déçus, je m’engage à écouter du DIAM’S pendant un mois !
PS : Si vous êtes vraiment déçus, faites semblant d’apprécier, je ne tiendrai pas un mois !
