Je dois avouer que je partais avec un énorme a priori sur ce groupe, qui ne m’avait pas du tout séduit en première partie d’AMON AMARTH et DIMMU BORGIR le 5 Octobre 2007 à l’Elysée Montmartre. Je peux même vous dire que le chant de Mangan Klavborn m’avait sérieusement irrité … Sans le savoir, j’avais assisté au concert d’un jeune combo mais dont les membres sont déjà des habitués du circuit, à savoir Niclas Engelin (guitares, ex-IN FLAMES, GARDENIAN et PASSENGER avec Anders Friden), Marcus Sunesson (guitares, ex-THE CROWN), Michael Hakansson (basse, ex-EVERGREY), et Mojjo Moilanen (ex-LORD BELIAL). De plus, Absolute Design bénéficie de la prod de Daniel Bergstrand et … Anders Friden (comme on se retrouve). Autant dire qu’ENGEL a la pression du résultat, comme on dit en sport, et j’attendais avec une certaine crainte l’écoute de leur album …
Dans un premier temps, si la présence de Friden et le passé de Engelin incitent à comparer ENGEL avec IN FLAMES, il serait réducteur de l’affilier au courant Death Metal suédois. D’ailleurs, Mangan Klavborn abandonne régulièrement sa voix Death au profit d’un chant clair travaillé et nettement plus convaincant. Côté musique, le cocktail est détonnant : un coup de Néo, un soupçon de Death, beaucoup de lignes mélodiques sur les grattes, des harmonies vocales assez bien trouvées, et toujours un petit quelque chose qui retient l’attention. D’autant que l’entrée en matière de Absolute Design est béton : « In Splendour », « Hurricane Season », « Casket Closing », ou encore « Next Closing Door » vous rentrent direct dans le crâne. Ces excellents titres trahissent pourtant une deuxième partie d’album un ton en dessous, peut-être un peu trop calquée sur une recette que le groupe a bien ciblée, mais exploite à outrance … Et ENGEL présente un curieux paradoxe, celui d’avoir moins d’impact quand il accélère le tempo, comme sur « Propaganda », « Calling Out », ou « Trail & Error », impressionnant de … naïveté.
Bref, pour l’épreuve du feu, ENGEL et son Absolute Design sont reçus, mais avec mention « peut mieux faire, à voir sur le second album ». Il y a un potentiel à confirmer, c’est certain. Autre objectif : convaincre sur scène. Et ça, croyez-moi, sur ce que j’ai vu il y a quelques jours (et notamment pour Klavborn), c’est pas gagné...
