Et voici venue une nouvelle sensation de cette énorme contrée musicale multi styles qu’est l’Angleterre ! Lorsqu’on évoque le mot musique avec «England», cela rime évidemment avec LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, JOY DIVISION, CARCASS, THE ROLLING STONES, THE WHO, IRON MAIDEN ou MOTORHEAD! On ne va pas tous les nommer, cela nécessiterai trois pages pour recenser tous les grands groupes anglais et puis là n’est pas le propos. THE GENTLEMENS OF DISTORTED SOUNDS, plus communément appelés THE GODS n’est pas encore un grand groupe mais cela pourrait en être une des nouvelle révélation, c’est-à-dire une sorte de coqueluche du Stoner Rock anglais avec leur premier réalisation studio Black AM. Un Stoner aux parfums de Glam sorti des années 70 avec une touche de Funk n’étant pas pour déplaire. Très groovies, les compositions de THE GODS donnent envie de taper du pied. Energique et dynamique, Les londoniens proposent des compositions tout de même parfois Heavy mais sans être lourdes pour autant. Dans le genre de MONSTER MAGNET, ce Black AM est un album qui s’écoute d’une traite avec un certain plaisir. Le combo britannique marque d’entrée plusieurs points avec les caractéristiques suivantes : la voix chaude et sensuelle de Gareth Nugent est complémentaire à la fois des rythmiques rapides et intenses et dans le même temps se fond comme du beurre dans les ambiances plus posées et aériennes. Album hétéroclite et composite, Black AM n’en a pas pour autant l’image d’un opus patchwork bricolé à la va-vite. On a donc droit à des titres speedés tels que «Fire in The Hole» ou «Electric», morceau d’ouverture pêchu et musclé. Dans un autre registre, les quatre compères sont également capables de distiller des rythmes Funky et groovy comme le démontrent les titres «The Future», «Chromatosed Nation» ou «Evil Eye» ! D’autre part, le titre «The Gods» fait carrément penser à du LED ZEPPELIN avec son riff usité des milliers de fois. D’ailleurs à ce titre, Nugent et ses trois acolytes ne se sont pas trop foulés avec ce riff pompé à du LED ZEPPELIN (titre «Come With Me») ! C’est avec les bonnes marmites que l’on fait les meilleures soupes pourrait être l’adage de THE GODS sur ce titre. Mis à part cela, on a donc une pièce musicale de plus de huit minutes prenante et saisissante de maturité variant les ambiances et les rythmiques tantôt costaudes tantôt doucereuses et aux chœurs magnifiques ! Jouissant donc d’un potentiel et d’un savoir-faire remarquable, THE GODS est un groupe qui certes ne casse pas la baraque mais toujours est-il que ce premier opus demeure rafraîchissant ! Une bonne surprise à recommander !
