Pour beaucoup TULUS apparait comme un énième obscure groupe venant de Norvège pratiquant un Black Metal basique. Or ce n’est pas le cas : TULUS a été formé en 1993 par deux membres fondateurs qui ne sont pas inconnus puisqu’il s’agit des têtes pensantes de KOHLD. Pour la petite histoire, TULUS a sorti quelques album jusqu’en 1999 : Pure Black Eternity (1996), Mysterion (1998) où apparait Sarah Jezebel Deva en guest, puis Evil en 1999. C’est à partir de cet album là que le groupe est mis en stand by, Sverre Stokland (Voix, Guitarre) et Bergli (Batterie) décident de créer KOLD.
Le retour de TULUS peut donc surprendre, accompagné de nouveau par le bassiste Victor, TULUS sort donc sept ans après, un album au doux nom de Biography Obscene avec le même line up que celui de l’enregistrement de Evil.
Musicalement le groupe n’a quasiment pas évolué depuis ses débuts et TULUS reprend la recette qu’il a utilisée pour ses disques précédents. Son Black Metal est lent, parfois mid tempo, avec des atmosphères et des passages particuliers causé par l’utilisation d’instruments très atypiques et rarement utilisé pour du Black Metal.
D’une couleur très sombre, accentué par une musique crue et dépouillée, Biography Obscene est très mélancoliques mais également agressifs. L’utilisation du saxophone, du violon, du piano qui agrémente les 10 compositions de cet album, donne une ambiance totalement différente de ce que le petit monde du Black. Même s’ils ne sont pas beaucoup utilisés, parfois cela surprend, souvent cela dérange. Les ambiances sombres sont très bien distillées et TULUS a la capacité à enchaîner les riffs lancinant où les mélodies sont devenues plus fournies. Le rythme s'est calmé et l'ambiance est passée de lugubre à glauque.
Biography Obscene est un concept album où pour la première fois, les paroles sont en anglais. Ce retour de TULUS est accompagné par la réédition de tous ses précédents albums qui ont subit un petit lifting : réenregistrement et nouvel artwork.
