Bien. Mettons les choses à plat. LILLIAN AXE. Mal parti dès le départ, vu que je n’ai jamais été fan de ce groupe, même lors de son heure de gloire, avec ses deux albums les plus reconnus, Lillian Axe et Love + War. Je vous l’accorde, ça n’était pas le pire groupe issu de la Second Wave Of American Heavy Metal (Ouais, j’adore ces termes la !!!), mais pas un des meilleurs non plus. Menant la danse conjointement avec WARRANT, BRITNY FOX et consorts, leur carrière avait bien débuté, mais s’est malheureusement échouée sur les récifs du grunge, comme beaucoup de leurs petits camarades. D’aucuns diront « bon débarras », avec un mépris certain, d’autres pleurent encore la disparition de leurs groupes chéris, avec leurs splendides permanentes, leurs Ferrari et autres santiags à bout de 30 centimètres. Je serais plus objectif sur ce constat, et me contenterai de dire qu’il est dommage que les rares bons groupes aient payé pour les charlots.
Ce ci dit, revenons à nos moutons, qui seraient plutôt des loups à en juger par la teneur décibellique de ce Waters Rising. Ce CD nous ramène à une chronique antérieure de l’excellent Mortne2001 (quel homme !), celle de Secret Society, d’EUROPE. On assiste à la même adaptation en douceur aux mœurs musicales de notre époque, sans toutefois renier le passé. Ce qui signifie guitares accordées en ré ou do dièse, puissance sonore, combinés à de belles mélodies estampillées 80’s.
On pourrait hurler à l’opportunisme, sans avoir vraiment tord ni raison, toujours est il qu’il est difficile de gloser sur la pertinence ou la sincérité de la démarche de LILLIAN AXE ou d’autres. Ne pouvons nous pas une bonne fois pour toutes admettre que le droit d’exister en tant que musicien est tout à fait légitime, et qu’il serait extrêmement vain de vouloir trouver une pertinence systématique dans la concrétisation d’une envie de pérenniser une œuvre, aussi anecdotique soit elle ?
Prenez Waters Rising, et effacez le nom de LILLIAN AXE sur la pochette. Mettez y cinq zigues à l’air désabusés, un nom bien tendance. Faites écouter à de jeunes branleurs et à des critiques style Rock Sound. Observez. C’est gagné, l’album passe l’épreuve du jugement, et emballé c’est pesé.
Il faut dire que tout est là. Les titres sont diablement bons, le chant est chaud et velouté, mais sait se faire corrosif quand il le faut, les guitares sont inventives, malignes, agressives, plaintives, tendres, et la rythmique n’admet aucune baisse de régime. Les titres forts ne manquent pas, ils sont même légion, ce qui est d’autant plus appréciable que l’album est assez long. Sans vouloir être exhaustif, jetez vous dans le désordre sur « Become A Monster » et sa puissance qui renvoie le « Some Kind Of Monster » de METALLICA au paradis des Bisounours, « I Have To Die Goodbye » et son climat étouffant, « Until The End Of The World » demie ballade heavy qui donne envie de câliner un cactus, « Fields Of Yesterday », ballade entière tout sauf mièvre, ou encore « Thirst » et sa lourdeur de fort bon aloi.
Moralité, les passages à vide ne font parfois pas de mal. Et quoiqu’on en dise, c’est le contenant qui compte, pas le contenu. Et question contenu, Waters Rising à de quoi étancher votre soif de défoulement !
