Pour décrocher son premier deal avec un label, HURTLOCKER enregistre sa première démo Autumnal en 2001 et arrive à fourrer son nom sur des affiches prestigieuse en faisant la première partie de groupe confirmé et aux styles diversifiés comme OBITUARY, GORGUTS, KING DIAMOND et AGONISTIC FRONT. Après un premier album (Fear In A Handful Of Dust) se rapprochant du style Thrash de SLAYER, HURTLOCKER continue son petit bonhomme de chemin avec Embrace The Fall, son second album.
Pour ce nouvel album, ce combo de Chicago propose une musique brutale, sans concession, teinté de modernisme, s’éloignant de ses principales influences SLAYER et SEPULTURA (à ses débuts), pour jouer un « Thrashcore » très actuel.
Outre la musique qui est composée de riffs assassins portés par des tempos rapides, la voix de Grant Belcher est rageuse et corrosive et assomme tout sur son passage. Doté d’un timbre rappelant celui du chanteur de HATEBREED, cette voie fait sonner les titres comme des morceaux de Hardcore. On a l’impression que HURTLOCKER cherche à bourriner tout simplement, à jouer le plus fort et le plus brutalement possible, avec le maximum de notes et de volume sonore. Pourtant ce n’est pas le cas : la voie de Grant est bien trop portante et sauvage. Pourtant, on a le doit à un peu de répit sur « At Last », ou de quelques mélodies sur « Release Of Sin », mais cela reste éphémère, même si cela casse le rythme sauvage de Embrace The Fall.
Aucune influence Old-school n’est à noté, HURTLOCKER se veut réellement moderne. Il y a autant de Blast Beat que d’oignons dans une oignonière : à ne plus savoir quoi en faire ! Les morceaux se ressembles les uns les autres, où il aurait fallut une petite pointe de mélodie en plus pour les diversifier.
Embrace The Fall est très moderne, mais ne sonne pas pour un copeck original. Ce second opus est bien bâti, extrême, agressif, bourré d’énergie et ne faisant pas dans la dentelle, mais qui devient vite monocorde et monotone.
