Arpentant les scènes hexagonales depuis leur création en 1994, le groupe originaire des Vosges n’en est pas à son premier coup de maître. Avec ses deux précédents albums Titan’s Awakening sorti en 2001 (album qui ne nous avait en aucun cas laissé de marbre) et Colossal Than Strife deux ans plus tard, on peut ainsi en déduire que les Français de KRONOS nous avait déjà démontré qu’ils avaient de bonnes choses à nous proposer. Pour les néophytes, KRONOS est une formation de Brutal Death old-school dans la plus pure tradition du genre. Comme vous pourrez vous en doutez eu égard au patronyme du groupe et aux noms donnés aux différents albums, les thèmes et paroles des morceaux du quintet sont donc axés sur la mythologie grecque principalement.
Suite à des soucis de line-up, KRONOS semble avoir trouvé la bonne formule pour repartir sur un bon rythme de croisière avec ce troisième opus sorti cette année, The Hellenic Terror, ode de Brutal Death à la gloire des divinités de la Grèce Antique. Influencés par des formations cultes telles que les premiers SUFFOCATION, CRYPTOPSY pour ne citer qu’eux, les cinq hommes de l’Est conduits par la paire Grams et Richard aux guitares nous assène une musique sans ornement, brute de décoffrage et sans concessions. Existant depuis plus de dix ans, le groupe a eu tout le loisir de peaufiner son jeu et ses sonorités. Si le groupe sonne comme ses glorieux prédécesseurs, on ne pourra en aucun leur reprocher un certain esprit créatif et des compositions soignées et rentre dedans. Enregistré au Hertz Studio en Pologne (VADER, DECAPITATED, TRAUMA), la production énorme est de mise comme pour les groupes précités. Fans de maîtrise technique et de précision au-dessus du lot, de plans de batterie exterminateurs et de guitares acérées à la file, ce disque est pour vous. Si l’ensemble est plus que correct et la cohésion au rendez-vous, certains morceaux se détachent tout de même du lot comme «The Road of Salvation», l’énorme mastodonte «A Huge Cataclysm» ou la très étudiée «Petrify Beauty Part 1-Divine Vengeance». Notons que les soli sont également exécutés à la perfection comme en témoigne le morceau «Ouranian Cyclops». Le morceau final «Maze of Oblivion» quant à lui nous montre l’étendue du talent de ces musiciens. La France peut être fière de compter en son sein des formations aussi abouties que KRONOS.
Un bon album de Brutal Death, finement exécuté et interprété, une grosse demi-heure qui prouve encore une fois que KRONOS est l’un des groupe majeur de la scène Brutal Death française actuelle. Un groupe toujours en progression et en devenir. Place maintenant au KRONOS sur scène, où leurs prestations valent le détour…
