Existant depuis 1994, EMBRYONIC CELLS est l’exemple que la motivation et la persévérance sont des facteurs indispensables pour « vivre » dans l’underground. Malgré de nombreux problèmes, et suite à plus de 12 ans de longévité, EMBRYONIC CELLS sorts son premier album Before The Storm sous forme d’auto production.
Les 10 titres qui forment cet album sont dans un style Black Metal moderne, accrocheur, avec des touches Thrash violente et de nombreuses nappes de claviers servant principalement à donner une froideur aux riffs de guitare. La musique de EMBRYONIC CELLS privilégie l’efficacité et l’émotion. Les titres sont agressifs sans être apocalyptique. L’ensemble est maîtrisé de bout en bout. Les compos sont inspirées, solides et on sent vraiment qu’elles forment un album complet et compact. On n’a jamais l’impression d’avoir des morceaux mis les uns à coté des autres, même si le titre « Bound To Your Grief » peut se démarquer du reste.
Fort de plus de 180 concerts effectués avec entre autres, GWAR, MISANTHROPE ou NUCLEAR ASSAULT, EMBRYONIC CELLS a su créer son propre style. Il est difficile de trouver quelles sont ses influences. La musique est étoffée, riche, variée. Les nappes de claviers apportent un plus indéniable : discrètes, omniprésentes, elles donnent un effet de mélancolie assez fort. Les guitares sont hargneuses et apportent la puissance à l’album. Les textes en anglais de Before The Storm sont assez sombres et traitent de la notion de bien et de mal de l’intériorité humaine.
Les titres comme « Godess Earth » ou « In The Grave » sont de véritables moments agressifs et mélancoliques à la fois. On sent que le groupe a atteins un haut niveau. Le seul petit reproche se situe au niveau de l’intro et de l’outro : elles me semblent totalement inutiles. Before The Storme aurait dû démarrer directement par « I Scream In Black » qui est absolument fantastique (quelle performance du Chanteur !!!). Il serait surprenant qu’avec une disque pareil, EMBRYONIC CELLS n’arrive pas à trouver un label qui les aide à exprimer leur art !
