Derek SHERINIAN est un très bon pianiste. C’est un fait. Sa technique est sans faille, même si je trouve parfois ses choix de sons assez hasardeux. Il a fait partie de DREAM THEATER, un de mes groupes préféré, mais, manque de chance, sur les deux albums que j’aime le moins. Le bouche trou A Change Of Seasons, et le commercial Falling Into Infinity. De plus, pour les avoir vus sur cette tournée, le look très rock star vinyle du bonhomme ne m’avait pas vraiment enchanté non plus.
Virgil Donati est un batteur monstrueux. Sa régularité de frappe et son inventivité le placent dors et déjà parmi les meilleurs du monde. Un simple coup d’œil à sa discographie suffit à comprendre qu’il reste un session-man très demandé.
On ne présente plus Allan HOLDSWORTH. Jazz-rocker furieux, ses descentes de gammes chromatiques ont enflammé les albums de groupes comme GONG, SOFT MACHINE, Jack BRUCE ou encore Stanley CLARKE. Une référence ultime en quelque sorte.
Pourtant je ne peux m’empêcher de penser que la réunion de ces trois talents sur Quantum, cinquième album « officiel » de PLANET X est plus que décevante. Certes, l’exécution est parfaite, mais comment en aurait il pu en être autrement ? Seulement, si les parties rythmiques sont écoeurantes de facilité et de brio, si la guitare volubile nous emmène très haut, et si la basse maintient le tout à des années lumières de la compréhension d’un musicien de niveau normal, on ne peut s’empêcher de crier au gâchis.
Les compositions s’enchaînent avec longueur, et le son du clavier de Derek est toujours aussi insupportable, sauf lorsqu’il choisit l’option piano simple.
On à l’impression d’écouter une BO de film de science-fiction, mais sans l’aspect « cosmique » de la chose. On se trouve face à un simple mélange de jazz-rock, de Metal et de progressif, joué comme à la parade. J’ai beau avoir écouté l’album trois fois de suite, je ne suis pas parvenu à dégager un titre fort, ce qui n’est jamais très bon signe dans ce cas. Mis à part le morceau d’ouverture « Alien Hip Hop », et son tempo franchement bancal très original, et son superbe passage solo à la SATRIANI, et le très beau duel guitare/batterie sur « The Thinking Stone », rien.
Les morceaux se suivent sans provoquer aucune émotion, et l’entreprise devient tout à coup très fatigante. Lorsque des musiciens aux CV si impressionnants se rassemblent, on est en droit d’exiger autre chose qu’une simple démonstration de technique. En live, on appelle ça un clinic.
Ici, on appelle ça un album clinique.
