Si vous avez répondu oui à au moins une de ces questions, alors vous vous êtes sans doute déjà jeté sur la dernière offrande du maître, le bien nommé Psalms Of Extinction, de son (plus trop) side-project PAIN. Cette créature hybride, bien loin des premiers balbutiements Death-Metal de PETER, est l’archétype de l’album parfait, roublard, artistiquement au dessus de tout soupçon, qu’on ne chronique qu’avec des pincettes, de peur de heurter la sensibilité de ses fans. Oui, le dernier PAIN est une tuerie. Le genre de CD que Richard PATRICK rêve de faire depuis des lustres, sans jamais en approcher la substance de base.
Car Peter n’est pas là pour amuser la galerie, il a passé l’age. Non, il aspire à d’autres dessins, la recherche de l’absolu, en matière de compositions comme de production. Et il n’est pas loin du but.
Les hits ne manquent pas, ils sont même pléthore ici. Envoyez vous au pif, « « Nailed To The Ground », « Clouds Of Ecstasy » ou encore « Bottle’s Nest » et si vous ne vous levez pas tous comme un seul homme pour transformer votre salon IKEA en dance-floor, alors jetez moi la première pierre. « Play Dead » et ses arrangements quasi classiques, et « Just Think Again », sa lourdeur, sa mélodie pure, vous emmèneront là ou les notes font office de discours, et vous n’en reviendrez pas indemnes. Quant au quasi techno « Computer God », au délicieusement mélodique « Does It Really Matter », le prophète les a cliniquement ciselés pour en faire des machines de guerre implacables, qui enivreront les plus sobres d’entre vous.
Si le nom de Peter TÄGTGREN est synonyme de réussite, ça n’est pas par hasard, le bonhomme a bossé, en plus de l’incroyable talent naturel dont il est doté. C’en est presque écœurant à force, on en vient à guetter le moindre faux pas. Cette fameuse anecdote de Peter et de son ampli Mesa Boogie est caractéristique de l’individu. Après avoir acquis l’appareil, au son désastreux selon lui, il l’a trituré comme un malade afin de lui donner un son à la hauteur de ses attentes. Le jour où il a enfin réussi à obtenir le son parfait, il l’a revendu pour en acheter un autre et recommencer.
C’est symptomatique. C’est un enfant gâté qui jette ses jouets lorsqu’il en a tiré le meilleur.
PAIN est proche de la perfection maintenant.
On peut craindre pour son avenir...
