Me voilà un peu rassuré quant à la situation du Metal prog mondial. Après avoir attendu en vain le nouveau messie capable de renouveler les us et coutumes du genre, j’en ai conclu que même si son arrivée n’était pas pour tout de suite, le bilan des actions déjà entamées n’était pas si négatif.
En témoigne le premier album de THOUGHT CHAMBER, Angular Perceptions. Certes, cette nouvelle génération de conquérants du Saint Graal n’est pas encore prête à nous pondre un 2112, ou un Tales From Topographic Oceans, mais on sent en arrière plan comme une envie de faire tomber les barrières qui les sépare de leurs aînés.
En témoignent les deux brillants instrumentaux présents sur ce CD, « Mr Qwinkle’s Therapy » et « Accidently On Purpose », pleins de créativité et d’envie, de plaisir de jouer et d’offrir à l’acheteur quelque chose d’un tant soit peu inédit. Les patterns rythmiques défilent à l’infini, la basse assurant une cohésion diabolique avec la guitare, qui elle-même survole les débats avec arrogance et maîtrise absolue.
On retrouve à la guitare Michael Harris, qui n’est pas vraiment un débutant, puisque il officie dans de nombreux groupes depuis le début des 90’s, tels ARCH RIVAL ou encore SURGEON, sans compter ses multiples interventions soli. Dire qu’il contrôle son instrument est un euphémisme, tant il fait parler ses six cordes avec incredible gusto.
Si vous doutez encore de son potentiel, jetez vous entre les feuilles le miraculeux « God Of Oblique » et ses lignes harmoniques qui serpentent dans les méandres d’un vrai tourbillon musical novateur.
Mais l’homme n’oublie pas que seules les compositions valides peuvent servir son art, alors il nous concocte quelques pièces agréablement hot, comme « A Legend’s Avalon » et son refrain digne des charts, « Balance Of One » ou Ted LEONARD d’ENCHANT nous fait une véritable démonstration de sa puissance vocale hors norme, ou encore « A Mind Beyond », qui clôt l’album sur une note de classicisme sans oublier de ménager quelques ambiances lourdes, inquiétantes, ou au contraire légères comme une plume.
OK, je l’admets, cet album ne chamboulera certainement pas l’ordre établi, mais il permet de se rasséréner à la fontaine de l’efficacité et d’une audace, si encore assez timorée, qui n’en reste pas moins présente.
Renouveler sans trahir, respecter sans aduler, c’est tout ce qu’on vous demande.
