Autre guitariste célèbre pour ses velléités en solo, Alex SKOLNICK, ex mentor et garant d’une certaine caution mélodique chez TESTAMENT, nous propose ses vues sur le jazz avec son nouvel album en trio, Last Day In Paradise. Tout comme Kiko LOUREIRO, Alex refuse de gangrener son talent dans un style trop proche du Metal, et nous embarque dans un voyage aux confins de l’harmonie, bien entouré en cela par deux comparses, Nathan PECK à la basse, et Matt ZEBROSKI à la batterie.
Ne vous y trompez pas, il n’est pas question ici de jazz-rock, ni même d’ersatz de Metal, mais de jazz pur. Certes légèrement coupé et original, mais les bases sont là. Et si l’on excepte la parenthèse « Western Sabbath Stomp », mélange hargneux de hard-rock et de blues tord-boyaux, le reste n’est que chromatisme et mesures impaires.
SKOLNICK à su faire apprécier au grand public sa mixture hors norme. Pas sur qu’il en soit de même avec les puristes. Pourtant, la mæstria est bien présente. Et toujours dans le but d’être là ou l’on ne l’attend pas, le sieur Alex nous sert une fois de plus, ses arrangements et arguments jazzy sur compos pourtant bien énervées à la base. Cela donne, dans l’ordre du CD, « Tom Sawyer » de RUSH complètement free-jazz et pourtant à la hauteur de l’original (il est sur que RUSH a plus d’une fois flirté avec le style), « Practica Lo Que Predicas », version jazz espagnol du classique « Practice What You Preach », de l’album du même nom de TESTAMENT, aussi méconnaissable que Lionel JOSPIN grimé en drag-queen, et « Revelation (Mother Earth) » du vieil OZZY, début 80, saupoudrée d’un feeling bien samba.
Le reste est loin d’être négligeable, on oscille entre le planant et atmosphérique « Last Day In Paradise », et son final digne de 2001, « The Lizard », entraînante à souhait, presque dansante, « Channel 4 », respect tenant presque de l’ascétisme envers les tables de loi du jazz, et « Out There Somewhere » chaloupée, balancée, respect.
On comprend mieux à l’écoute de ce disque pourquoi Alex à un jour quitté TESTAMENT. Il avait tellement plus à offrir que du Heavy Metal réchauffé au butagaz pour soirée Kro de rigueur. Il nous prouve de facto qu’il est un immense guitar-héro, dans le sens noble du terme, artiste au service de son art, et non l’inverse.
C’est beau, c’est chaud, c’est pas pour les ramollos. Comment hésiter ? On n’hésite pas. On achète et on se tait !
