Retour à un label indépendant pour les Américains de POISON THE WELL après le décevant You Come Before You sorti en 2003. Il est de mise de se demander si les nombreux et conséquents changements de line-up ont eu raison du groupe. C'eut été dommage étant donné le potentiel énorme que détenait le groupe à ses débuts. On se rappelle tous de la bombe émotionnelle qu'était The Opposite of December, le premier véritable album du groupe, doté de hits comme "Nerdy" ou encore "Slice Paper Wrists". Alors qu'en est-il aujourd'hui?
Il est tout d'abord évident que le groupe a opéré un changement de style non négligeable. Même si quelques titres restent sévèrement nerveux ("Letter Thing", "Naive Monarch"), la plupart des autres ralentissent lourdement la cadence, tombant dans un rock sombre et étrange. Les cris se font également plus rares, même si - je vous rassure - Jeffrey Moreira n'a rien perdu de ses impressionnantes capacités vocales. Malgré un ensemble résolument plus rock, il est indéniable que le groupe a été puiser ces influences dans de nombreux autres styles. On observe donc des tonalités allant Post Rock au Black Metal en passant par le Rock n' Roll. Et tout ça pour un rendu qui n'est pas toujours très efficace. La lenteur abordée sur des titres comme "Nagaina" ou "Pleading Post" manque souvent d'intensité, et la sauce a du mal à prendre. Il est difficile de rentrer dans cet album. La faute à des compositions trop en surface? Le tout manque peut être un peu de hargne... Du coup, on est assez partagé à l'écoute de cet opus. Loin d'être mauvais, on a malgré tout du mal à se laisser emporter par cet amas d'étranges mélodies. Les fans de la première heure seront certainement déçus, d'autres apprécieront surement, mais qui seront-ils?
