« On avance, on avance on avance, c’est une évidence, on a pas assez d’essence pour faire la route dans l’autre sens, on avance »…comme Alain Souchon avait raison en écrivant les paroles de cette chanson. Quand l’histoire commence à avancer sans vous, il est très difficile de la rattraper. Et à force de poursuite, on prend le risque de passer à côté de sa vie.
Prenez Charlie Dominici par exemple. On peut dire qu’il a sacrément raté le coche avec DREAM THEATER. Aujourd’hui, si tout s’était passé comme il l’avait prévu, il pourrait être le vocaliste du plus grand groupe de prog du monde. Mais non, pas de bol. On appelle ça le syndrome Pete Best, ou bien Paul DiAnno. Alors après de telles mésaventures, il y a deux solutions. Faire de suite table rase du passé, oublier les actes manqués et repartir sur de nouvelles bases, ou bien s’enfoncer dans les regrets, et essayer de ranimer la flamme qui n’aura brûlé que très peu de temps.
Alors je vous conseille de mettre le coté le fait que Charlie a un jour chanté aux cotés de Portnoy, Petrucci & co, et d’aborder cet album l’esprit vierge. DOMINICI, le groupe, c’est du prog solide. D’autant plus que Charlie a mis de coté les tics qui rendaient les vocalises de When Dream & Day Unite exaspérantes. Plus d’ultrasons, plus de testicules coincées dans le battant de la porte, Charlie chante, et beaucoup mieux qu’à l’époque. Sa voix est veloutée, charmeuse, chaude, et colle à la perfection aux morceaux interprétés par son backing band. Certes, le terrain est balisé, depuis longtemps, le prog répondant à des codes très précis qu’il parait inutile de violer sous peine de s’aliéner une bonne partie des puristes. Car c’est de prog très classique dont il s’agit là. Avec James LaBrie derrière le micro, on pourrait croire à un remake d’Awake, le coté Thrash en moins. Les contretemps sont légions, les breaks sont précis et tantôt furieux, tantôt mélodiques, les titres sont longs et se développent au gré de riffs savamment trouvés. Rien de bien neuf, mais tout est parfaitement exécuté, et le seul léger reproche que l’on pourrait faire est que les chansons défilent sans qu’on arrive vraiment à s’attacher à l’une d’entre elles. Ceci dit, c’est peut être le but recherché, puisque nous sommes en présence d’un concept album. Loin, très loin derrière un Operation Mindcrime ou d’un Metropolis 2000, mais on pense parfois à The House Of Atreus de VIRGIN STEELE, pour le coté grandiloquent. Si vous voulez vous faire les dents sur du puissant, je vous recommande « School Of Pain » pour son riff post-intro étonnement explosif, l’instrumental qui ouvre l’album, « The Monster » qui sait jouer avec les ambiances, « The Calling » et son énergie purement Hetfieldienne, même si le riff est légèrement pompé sur « Honor Thy Father » de….DREAM THEATER, ou encore « A New Hope » et ses chœurs guerriers, qui clôture l’album sur une note de bon ton.
Bien, ça n’est pas avec cet album que M Dominici va devenir calife à la place du calife, mais il s’assure une bonne place dans le royaume, et en cas de faux pas, ou de défection du titulaire, qui sait…. Après tout, c’est avec lui qu’une grande page du progressif s’est ouverte…il y a maintenant 18 ans…
