Qu’en est-il de l’état des lieux en ce qui concerne le Black Metal en 2007 ? Sa situation reste elle plus ou moins la même que lors de sa résurgence, dans la première moitié des 90’s ? Ou est passé l’underground d’antan, celui qui effrayait le mainstream au point de stigmatiser les douleurs de la société au travers du comportement profondément misanthrope de quelques musiciens au teint blafard ? Est il toujours un état d’esprit, ou bien les gimmicks répétés et pathétiques de son symbolisme l’ont il enterré à jamais ?
Nous n’aurons plus jamais un De Mysteriis Dom Satanas, ni un Aske, encore moins un Storm Of The Light’s Bane, il faut se faire à cette idée. Qui reste debout aujourd’hui ? MAYHEM est mort d’avoir trop projeté sa propre image au travers du miroir de sa légende, DARKTHRONE est une blague qui n’amuse plus guère que ses propres créateurs, IMMORTAL se voudrait Heavy, mais n’est plus qu’une pâle caricature de lui-même, quand aux autres, ceux qui s’auto incarnent défenseurs du mythe, ils ne font qu’étouffer la tempête à grands coups de démos mal enregistrées au service d’une musique insipide, aussi terrifiante qu’une mauvaise grimace de mardi-gras.
Alors MARDUK. Ceux qui se sont toujours tenus prudemment à l’écart de ce gigantesque barnum, certes lucratif, mais ô combien réducteur à l’échelle d’une crédibilité ardue à conserver.
Une carrière quasi sans faille. Une discographie qui, si elle n’évite pas la redite de temps à autre reste un modèle du genre. Des balbutiements de Dark Endless à Rom 5:12, il n’y a qu’un pas. Le plus dur à franchir, celui de la durée. Ce qu’ils ont fait, une fois de plus.
Rom 5:12 est un album qui fait peur, dans tous les sens du terme. Parce qu’il est parfait. Musicalement, idéologiquement, graphiquement. C’est une déclaration de guerre. Alors qu’ils croyaient être allé au bout d’une formule avec le très surestimé Panzer Division Marduk, ils viennent de prouver qu’ils ne souffrent aucune comparaison. Ils alternent les ambiances jusqu’à l’overdose d’ultra violence, de trouille, d’obscurantisme, de mysticisme, de claustrophobie, et on y croit, on les suit à travers un périple que même Attila n’aurait emprunté.
De la lourdeur extrême de « Accuser, Opposer », à la furie de « Cold Mouth Prayer », en passant par l’intermède oppressant « 1651 », l’église satanique de MARDUK ferme ses portes sur les approximations, les hésitations, la compassion, viole la Vierge Marie et crucifie pour la deuxième fois le Nazaréen.
Mortuus arrive même sans difficulté à faire oublier Legion, le précédent prêtre de la débauche, tant il vomit ses psaumes à la gloire du malin. Morgan est allé déterrer ses riffs au plus profond du cercle des damnés, et force est d’admettre que sa guitare est la meilleure propagande dont Lucifer pouvait rêver.
Rom 5:12 n’est pas un album. C’est un chemin de croix. Le votre. Mais il n’y a pas d’expiation possible, même en suivant la route jusqu’au bout, les oreilles en sang. Vous devrez encore passer une éternité parmi les flammes de l’enfer.
Alors MARDUK. S’il n’en reste qu’un.
