DRAGONFORCE (uk) - Inhuman Rampage (2006)

Inhuman Rampage n’a pas usurpé son nom ; l’album est un déluge de notes, de battements assenés à un rythme proprement inhumain. Un peu abasourdi par cette avalanche d’une rare intensité, je décidai d’extraire une partie de la piste « Revolution Deathsquad », excellente par ailleurs, pour la soumettre à quelques tests dans mon éditeur audio. Et là, surprise ; sur certaines parties du morceau la cadence de la grosse caisse de Dave Mackintosh atteint les 6 battements/ seconde soit 360 coups/ minutes... ce qui, pour vous donner un ordre d’idée, avoisine la cadence de tir d’un AK-47 Kalachnikov...
Mais si on a pu accuser les DRAGONFORCE, par le passé, de produire un Metal rapide mais bordélique, ce troisième album ne laisse aucune place à l’amateurisme. Tout y est exécuté avec une rapidité virtuose et une maîtrise inouïe. Vadim Pruhzanov (clavier), au sommet de son art, rivalise ainsi de brio avec la paire de guitaristes, Li et Totman, pour nous offrir des mélodies très enlevées et complètement déjantées. La voix de Theart, parfaitement intégrée à l’ensemble, parachève l’ouvrage.
Vitesse, maîtrise et créativité sont donc les maître-mots d’un album qui à lui seul, justifie le succès que rencontre DRAGONFORCE outre-manche. Mais comme rien n’est parfait, on peut néanmoins reprocher à l’album sa chanson de cloture, « Trail of Broken Hearts » qui en plus de casser le rythme laisse une impression mitigée de l’ensemble lorsque la musique cesse. On ne le répétera jamais assez, les ballades n’apportent rien quand on prétend faire du Power Metal (c’est en tous cas mon avis).
De cet album on retiendra donc les trois premiers titres « Through the Fire and Flames », « Revolution Deathsquad », mais également l’excellent « Storming the Burning Fields » qui forment à eux trois le manifeste du (very) Speed Metal tel que développé par les DRAGONFORCE.
En résumé, si vous êtes un inconditionnel de Speed Metal, cet album figure déjà dans votre discothèque. Pour les autres, le petit chèque de mamie ne sera jamais aussi bien employé...
