Première écoute : mouais, super, encore un groupe qui veut ressembler aux vieux albums d’ANATHEMA. Dommage.
Deuxième écoute : bon, ok, on sent l’influence, mais y aurait pas quelque chose là-dessous quand même ? Allez, un chti quelque chose quand on gratte ?
Troisième écoute : putain, que c’est bon. Un trip planant, prenant et flippant de plus d’une heure, ça le fait.
Vous l’aurez compris, malgré une apparente banalité, INBORN SUFFERING, pour peu qu’on lui laisse le temps et la chance, saura surprendre l’auditeur dans ces accords lourds plaqués tels des plaque de béton qui vous écrasent la cage thoracique. Le mélange gros accords qui traînent et lignes de guitare mélodique n’est pas une révolution en soi, mais il faut savoir trouver les bons pour émouvoir et capter l’attention. Chose que ce Wordless Hope arrive à faire sans problème. D’ailleurs, dés l’ouverture, l’attention est happée par le grand et long « This Is Who we are ». Il annonce clairement la couleur de ce que l’on retrouvera tout le reste de l’album. C’est indéniable, on sent des influences d’ANATHEMA à l’époque de The Silent Enigma, surtout dans les accélérations et les ralentissements, choses qui cassent le rythme pour éviter de lasser dans cette touffeur ambiante. Et tout se bâtira ensuite sur ce schéma, comme le magnifique « Monolith », où guitare claire et saturée se mélange dans une mélancolie qui prend aux tripes. « The Agony Within » n’est pas en reste et le riff d’ouverture de guitare, qui dure comme il se doit, laisse aussi la place à une belle démonstration de Thomas à la batterie.
On a souvent l’impression que les groupes de Doom rament un peu quand il s’agit de technique, et c’est parfois vrai. Seulement, dans le cas d’INBORN SUFFERING, il n’y a rien de plus faux. Les gusses maîtrisent leur instrument dans ce qu’ils veulent en montrer et rien ne dépasse que l’on voudrait couper par simple plaisir sadique. Le seul reproche que je ferais, c’est la longueur des morceaux. Un peu plus de morceaux un peu moins longs serait un mieux.
En tous cas, même s’il ne se vautre pas dans l’originalité suprême, cet album apporte une ligne sur le CV d’INBORN SUFFERING qui n’est pas à négliger. Un groupe qu’il faudra certainement suivre de très près par la suite.
