Jeune groupe (moyenne d’age, 18 ans !) venu des froides contrées suédoises, AVATAR n’a cependant pas grand-chose à voir avec la pop léchée de ses confrères d’ABBA. Pourtant léchée, sa musique l’est assurément, dans un style radicalement différent. Dans un souci de simplification par vulgarisation, je me suis risqué à la décrire comme étant du Néo-Thrash, mais c’est une manière bien globale pour la définir. On trouve beaucoup d’ingrédients dans la soupe d’AVATAR. Du Thrash évidemment, un soupçon de Death, beaucoup de Heavy, une petite quantité de Progressif. N’allez pas croire pour autant que Thoughts Of No Tomorrow n’est qu’un infâme brouet à peine digne de rassasier la faim d’un vieux rat d’égout, au contraire, la finesse du plat proposé pourrait en surprendre plus d’un à l’occasion. Non dénué d’influences, ce premier album long format l’est aussi. On croit reconnaître au détour d’un sillon (dur sur un cd, il faut s’entraîner !), IN FLAMES, SOILWORK, mais aussi un poil de FEAR FACTORY, voire ENTOMBED, version light quand même. Malgré tout ceci, ça n’a rien d’un plagiat, bien au contraire, on peut même affirmer que les petits jeunes possèdent déjà une solide identité. Telle la varve sur la mince couche de glace, leur musique va donner lieu à une nouvelle donne pour leur carrière, les plaçant sans nul doute dans le peloton de tête des formations à suivre. J’ai noté après plusieurs écoutes des titres se détachant du lot, tels « War Song » au feeling très Terrible Certainty de KREATOR, « My Shining Star », avec son intro à la PANTERA, la furie de « STRANGER », véritable rouleau compresseur, où le chanteur prend des accents à la Chuck Billy version gromphh pas content, ou pour finir « The Skinner », qui, s’il n’a rien à voir avec le directeur adjoint du FBI, reste quand même assez agressif et régressif, dans le bon sens du terme, à savoir qu’il nous renvoie vers nos chères contrées de la Bay Area des années 80. Alors, quid de la sentence ? Voyons, de bons musiciens, une musique qui ne demande qu’à mûrir, une pochette sympa, sachons encourager la jeunesse à persévérer, à se débarrasser d’influences trop encombrantes, et à affiner son style pour devenir un jour une valeur sure du monde impitoyable du Metal. Rome ne s’est pas faite en un jour, alors que le rhum peut te défaire en un tour. Alors, mention spéciale, et à bientôt !
