Lorsqu’on évoque le cas du Thrash allemand d’origine, la question reste épineuse. Si l’on prend en compte la première démo de SODOM, la date demeure 1982… soit 1 an avant Kill’Em All, borne maîtresse en ce qui concerne la naissance de l’enfant bâtard du Heavy Metal. Est-ce vraiment important de connaître la genèse d’un style pour en apprécier les effets ? Comme si on préférait son fils aîné parce qu’il est venu au monde plus tôt en fait. Ridicule. Cela dit, la contestation américaine quand à la paternité de cette musique si décriée par les critiques mondiaux a quelque chose d’ulcérant. L’Allemagne, au même titre que ses cousins d’outre Atlantique a inventé quelque chose. Un Thrash différent, plus sommaire, plus brut, plus efficace serait on tenté de dire parfois. SODOM, KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, le triumvirat jamais remis en cause de la brutalité germanique. Toujours la plus de 20 ans après avec plus ou moins de bonheur selon l’histoire. Car c’est bien d’histoire dont il s’agit là. Celle se Schmier et de ses comparses, dont l’identité varie selon les époques.
Alors, Thrash Anthems, c’est quoi ? Un vulgaire best-of de plus, vaguement remixé ? Que nenni mes frères, DESTRUCTION s’est fendu d’un lifting up in time, et a offert une nouvelle jeunesse à d’anciens classiques constituant encore aujourd’hui l’essentiel de sa playlist live. Regardez, tout ou presque est là. De « Bestial Invasion » à « Cracked Brain », de « Mad Butcher » à « Unconscious Ruins ». Des piliers de répertoire quand on a tant d’années de carrière derrière soi. Analysons les données d’une façon plutôt brute. Cette opération est elle couronnée de succès ou pas ? Je serais tenté de dire que c’est selon. Autant sur les titres les plus récents (17 ans d’age minimum quand même !), la fontaine de jouvence a assez bien agi, spécialement sur les titres issus de l’album Release From Agony, qui pâtissait à l’époque d’une certaine faiblesse, nuisant considérablement à son impact, pourtant aussi important en Allemagne qu’And Justice For All aux Etats-Unis. Les morceaux de Cracked Brain, donnent l’occasion à Schmier de pousser la chansonnette, ce qu’il n’avait pas pu faire autrefois, d’où un cachet sympathique.
La ou le bat blesse, c’est sur les chansons les plus anciennes. Certes leur son d’origine était loin d’être irréprochable, mais c’est justement ce qui faisait leur charme. Avec le gros son de 2006, on a la désagréable impression d’avoir affaire à un tribute à DESTRUCTION, ou chaque groupe se ressemblerait. De plus, l’uniformisation de la production induit un sentiment de répétition extrêmement dérangeant au bout de 40 minutes d’écoute. L’effet produit est donc inverse. Au lieu de se réjouir de cette reinstrumentisation, on en vient à la déplorer, parce qu’elle donne lieu à un remplacement dans la norme d’un groupe qui n’en a jamais fait partie. Les deux inédits proposés, « Profanity » et « Deposition (Your Heads Will Roll) » restant dans la lignée de ce que DESTRUCTION compose depuis sa reformation, vous comprendrez de vous-mêmes que l’achat de cette compilation est tout sauf indispensable, sauf si vous êtes fans depuis cette reformation justement…
Mais pour les die-hard, on préférera se repencher sur les vinyles d’époque, certes moins puissant, mais ô combien plus jouissifs…
