Après deux albums surfant sur la vague Emo Pop Rock, les New Yorkais de DEAD POETIC se sont rendu compte que lorsque l’on parle du meilleur album de tous les temps, on parle plutôt de LED ZEPPELIN que de THE REFUSED (ce sont leurs mots). Alors quoi ? Fini les braillements Screamo et les sonorités Emo Pop ? Et bien pas vraiment. Même si la patte de PEARL JAM ou encore HELMET est très présente, le combo Américain conserve tout de même son côté teenager qui fut si cher aux deux premiers opus. En effet, la voix de Brandon Rike, aussi énergique qu’elle soit, reste teintée de crème chantilly et de noix de coco, s’accordant à merveille avec les quelques ballades langoureuses (« In Coma », « Animals »). Même si elle sait aussi montrer sa hargne et son côté épicé sur les titres plus énervés (« Narcotic », « Crashing Down »), il faut avouer qu’on ne se détache pas complètement de ce qui fait craquer les adolescentes actuellement. Côté instrumental on se situe dans la veine du rock des années 90, mêlé avec bon nombre d’ingrédients du Punk Rock moderne. L’ensemble sonne assez bien, notamment grâce à une entrée en matière fracassante avec le titre « Cannibal Vs. Cunning ». Ca se calme un peu ensuite. Même si on ressent une volonté de booster chaque titre au maximum, seuls quelques un y parviendront (« Narcotic », ou encore « Paralytic » avec la participation de Chino Moreno de DEFTONES). Les sonorités paraissent souvent déjà-vu et ont donc du mal à nous faire décoller pour de bon, et ceci malgré une production impeccable. L’opus s’achève avec le titre « Vices » qui illustre parfaitement l’ambiance générale, c'est-à-dire un rock puissant qui (malgré lui ?) conserve de profondes racines Emo Pop édulcorées. Un album sympa, donc, très loin d’égaler un quelconque classique mais qui se laisse écouter en période de Noël.
