On reproche souvent aux groupes de ne pas faire assez d’efforts pour sortir des carcans habituels, de trop profiter de la vague en quelques sortes. Cependant, il existe des groupes qui prennent la tangente dès le départ et se placent en complet décalage avec le reste de la scène musicale actuelle. SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM, avec un nom pareil il n’est pas surprenant que ce groupe fasse parti de ces derniers. Grand Opening and Closing n’est pas un album facile d’accès. Primo, il est particulièrement long (77 minutes). Secondo, il est particulièrement expérimental. Ces deux éléments réunis rendent l’écoute périlleuse et souvent fastidieuse. J’entends par là qu’un morceau de 10 minutes dont la consistance est un solo de triangle, on n’entend pas ça souvent… Si le Free-Jazz avait son équivalent dans le milieu du Rock, il y a de grandes chances pour que SGM en soit le fer de lance. En plus des instruments d’une formation rock classique, SGM s’arme d’une multitude d’instruments (marimba, cloches tibétaines, violon, harpe, clavecin etc.), et fait de chaque compos un spectacle oppressant. Teintée de couleurs obscures, une atmosphère malsaine perdure tout au long de l’album, même lorsque les mélodies se font plus douces. On est constamment soumis à une tension sonore très dérangeante. De nombreux styles sont passés en revue, Jazz, Metal, Classique etc., agencés de manière très étrange. Ainsi on passe d’une mélodie nerveuse et agressive sur « Sleep Is Wrong » à des sonorités Stoner sur « 1997 ». D’une ballade acoustique semi-glauque sur « Ambugaton » à une ambiante gore sur « Ablutions ». On se demande parfois où ils vont chercher leurs riffs tellement ceux-ci sont tordus, notamment sur « Powerless » et « The Stain ». Des influences telles que MR BUNGLE, HÖYRY-KONE et KING KRIMSON sont omniprésentes, mais l’univers, lui, est bien celui de SGM. Cet album est une alternative radicale à tout ce que l’on peut entendre de nos jours. Cependant, ça ne fait pas de lui un indispensable. Il est peu probable que l’on assiste à une nouvelle vague comme ce fut le cas avec PINK FLOYD ou KING KRIMSON. SGM est ultra underground et le restera sûrement (au grand regret de certains). A réserver aux fanatiques d’avant-garde et d’expérimental.
