Depuis sa création sous le nom ERBEN DER SCHÖPFUNG, le groupe pratique un Metal Gothique extrêmement conventionnel : un chant féminin souvent larmoyant, de la mélancolie et une petite touche de Pop, à quoi se sont ajoutés plus récemment des orchestrations. La liste des groupes à qui ELIS fait penser est trop longue pour qu’on l’énumère ici. Disons que la principale originalité du combo est qu’il vient du Lichtenstein ! Parce que, côté musique, vaut mieux pas trop chercher.
Ce nouvel album est identique aux précédents dans la mesure où l’on retrouve une musique qui ne fait pas mal à la tête. On écoute Griefshire comme on regarde les pubs à la télé, sans penser à grand-chose ; ce n’est pas franchement déplaisant mais on n’est pas mécontent d’enchaîner sur quelque chose de plus consistant.
Griefshire a un thème unique : l’histoire du fanatisme religieux de deux frères, de leur quête de vie éternelle. Mais, dans l’ensemble, on s’en fout un peu.
Le chant de Sabine Dünser, bien qu’un peu linéaire, est toujours assez séduisant ; cela dit, ne vous y attachez pas trop, elle est morte cet été ! (ndlr : hémorragie cérébrale le 7 juillet 2006, elle avait 29 ans.)
Musicalement, ce n’est pas mal foutu, les orchestrations sont particulièrement réussies. Mais l’ensemble a du mal à accrocher. On note aussi quelques maladresses comme l’apparition d’un chant Death sur « The Burning » : le mec gueule « Burn, Destroy » sur une chanson avec des mélodies partout, il doit se sentir seul. On dit que le ridicule ne tue pas mais je vous rappelle que la chanteuse est morte !
Il faut tout de même écouter « A New Decade », un titre intéressant – faute d’être révolutionnaire – où les riffs et les mélodies se marient adroitement. Ça fait tout de même peu de raisons de s’attacher à ce groupe qui confirme sa place de second couteau.
