Alors que sortait le premier album de RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, qui marquera les esprits avec des titres comme « Killing In The Name » ou encore « Wake Up » (qui sera repris plus tard sur la BO de Matrix) et qui affichait fièrement que l’album n’avait pas été fait avec des machines, un autre album allait influencer la scène Metal. Lui affirmait clairement son utilisation de machines et de samples en tout genre. Cependant, c’était bien du Metal qu’on allait se prendre dans la tronche. Un Metal simple, puissant, et sur lequel Zack allait placer des phrasés rappés dans tous les sens.
Aujourd’hui, c’est une chose commune, avec des groupes comme LIMP BIZKIT et consort mais, à l’époque (1993), le mélange n’était pas évident en soi. Et pourtant, CLAWFINGER nous a livré un album sans concessions, riche et varié, possédant une puissance intrinsèque phénoménale. Les guitares, avec leur timbre singulier est à la limite de l’électronique, possèdent pourtant bien tout le caractère propre à un gros son Metal. Les samples sont bien présents, mais ne prennent pas toute la place. Des titres comme « Catch Me » les mettent plus en avant, mais ils savent prendre leur place, ni plus non moins.
C’est vers la simplicité des morceaux, qui possèdent pourtant des rythmiques de tueur, qu’il faut se pencher. « Don’t Get Me Wrong » est la preuve ultime qu’un morceau n’a pas besoin de centaines de notes pour être bon. Un couplet fait avec une seule note et une bonne rythmique bien sentie est tout aussi bon, voire moins lourd, surtout s’il est ponctué par un refrain ne possédant que quelques accords. La même remarque pourrait être fait pour « Rosegrove », même si celui-ci a au moins deux fois plus de notes sur le couplet !
Et puis que dire du chant de Zack ? Un rap peut-être pas aussi poussé que certains groupes dont c’est la spécialité, parce que les syncopes dans le chant ne sont pas forcément son fort, mais une rage, une énergie qui transpire, même à travers le son pur du CD. Un vrai chanteur avec une vraie présence. Du côté des textes, on lorgne franchement vers un côté revendicatif fort, social à l’extrême. Le titre d’ouverture de l’album, « Nigger », en est un des meilleurs exemples.
Même s’il ne possède pas la production de leurs futurs albums, Deaf Dumb Blind est quand même une véritable bombe franche et sincère qui a le mérite d’être spontanée. Des années après, il n’a pas pris une ride et en montre encore à beaucoup de groupes qui émergent aujourd’hui.
