Light, l’auto-production précédente, était suffisamment prometteuse pour que l’on s’intéresse au devenir de cette jeune formation française. On s’attendait donc à ce que le groupe franchisse une nouvelle étape et corrige les quelques imperfections dues au manque de moyens pour nous régaler avec un travail plus professionnel. Hélas, FROZEN TIME se contente de nous refourguer une production très inégale, pour ne pas dire médiocre malgré les deux années qui nous séparent de l’album précédent. Ce ne serait pas grave si la qualité des compositions était présente, mais nous sommes obligé de constater une certaine érosion. On a beau se repasser ces 5 titres en boucle, on n’y trouve pas le charme de Light. Pourtant il y a de très bonnes idées et il est évident que FROZEN TIME a un potentiel. C’est pour ça que je leur en veux autant, car j’ai le sentiment que ce groupe peut sortir de grandes choses.
On retrouve le goût des riffs mariés à des ambiances particulières (comme sur l’intro de « The Dead Souls Speak To Them ») mais aussi ce soin apporté à l’émotion, que l’on constate sur « Help Me ». Bien que restant dans le registre Goth-Metal, la musique a évolué et l’on sent une ampleur nouvelle avec des arrangements plus travaillés et une écriture plus complexe. Mais les excellentes idées en côtoient de maladroites comme certains sons de claviers franchement cheap. De manière générale, on sent un talent évident, on lève souvent la tête en se disant que ça va être énorme, et puis tout retombe.
Les multiples changements de line-up ont certainement pesé lourd. Cette fois ce n’est pas moins que le chanteur qui a été remplacé par… une chanteuse. Pour une transition, il faut s’accrocher ! Marie Maniez passe du meilleur au pire ; elle peut véhiculer de très belles émotions et l’instant d’après horripiler l’auditeur. A tel point qu’après de très nombreuses écoutes je ne sais toujours pas quoi penser d’elle !
L’apport du chant féminin sur des parties Electro-Pop-Goth permet une comparaison rapide avec THEATRE OF TRAGEDY.
The Time Has Come est un album inégal qui déçoit moins par ses défauts que par son potentiel inexploité. Il est évident que la production très médiocre a beaucoup joué dans cette frustration. Car le chant aurait atteint une autre dimension et corrigé ses imperfections avec des moyens d’enregistrement professionnels. De même les nombreux arrangements, les multiples trouvailles donnant aux titres cette ambiance particulière auraient pris une tout autre ampleur.
